ICO - Discussion thread

Loving this game , completely missed it when it was first released (well I was 22 and to busy partying and getting drunk)

Currently playing through ICO first out of the HD collection luckily I'm playing in 3D too :smileyvery-happy:

These type of games never used to be my cup of tea action/puzzler games as I could never give them any attention , think I suffer from short attention disorder lol

Any way I thouht this would be a good place for noobs to the game and veterans to come and chat ,look for advice on what to do etc

I had to head over to gamefaq last night as I was stuck , it takes awhile for my brain to kick in lol

I'm currently up to the 'Crane' well was past it then decided to not save and throw myself off a wall :smileysad:

Re: ICO - Discussion thread

I was also 22 back in 2002 and I loved ICO so much, even more than Shadow of the Colossus.

One nice touch was that there were subtitles for the strange language used in the game, but you only actually got English subtitles on your second play through - so you never really knew exactly what was being said the whole way though on the first go.

The shadow creatures were pretty menacing too - having to juggle battering them with a stick and keeping Yorda out of mischief was pretty heart-thumping.

It certainly won't be everyone's cuppa, but I loved it and still do.

The only difference between 31-year-old me and the me back in 2002 is that now I have to factor renting a flat, paying council tax, water, gas, etc. into the income I have to spend on games and right now I just can't afford to buy a game that I have already played.

But when it comes down in price a bit I will certainly be reaching out for Yorda's hand...

Re: ICO - Discussion thread

I have never played it but it looks like a game I would love, both of them. I can only afford one game this month so I am trying to decide between this and Dark Souls! Its tough! Are these games long with good replay value?

Both games are great but I wouldn't say there's much replay value. I don't think they're that long either if I remember correctly. You'll probably get more value out of Dark Souls. The games didn't sell too well originally, and that may well be the case again so I wouldn't be surprised to see it drop in price pretty quickly.

100% worth buying though. SOTC is probably in my top 5 games for PS2. If you can buy it on release do so. The PS2 had small amount of copies made and wasn't hyped up. It was hard to get info on the game. 2nd hand still sell at £40 for a good copy and brand new is £100+ Not seen many places to pre-order the game and the release date has pretty much gone under the radar. If it's limited quantites the price will only go up. i've heard ICO is really good and SOTC is a really unique game. They will cost atleast £20 each for a beat up copy on the PS2. So to get both for £30 why you have the chance.

Re: ICO - Discussion thread

The games themselves are pretty linear and i doubt you will ever get lost in the game, nor are they long, but what Ueda has created are games that you feel empathy with the characters. Most games these days you don't really care about the characters as most are written poorly into the games and the structure of how the games play.

I will admit the controls are very floaty especially in ICO, but thats just a tiny niggle for the game. going back to the empathy alot to do with that is the game makes you press a button constantly to hold Yorda's hand and once that breaks you realise that you need to save her rather than want to save her just to finish the game. And watching her innocence as your working out to do a puzzle in the grassy areas, is a beautiful touch. To watch Yorda just running around after the birds/butterflies adds alot to the element of the need/want spectrum.

SOTC, is quite the opposite in how it portrays emotions, and to say anymore, i believe would spoil it for people. but another beautiful game. and the game could make you question yourself -not in your real life- but question your actions in the game as you get to the.

The score is a craft unto it's own, beautiful music all the way through. Although the game was -at the time- all scale and you did have the sense of being this tiny drop in a vast ocean, the score was also creating scale with each and every step.

The games can be frustrating to hell at times.

Absolutely. I still have the PS2 versions though so I'm happy to wait a bit for a price drop before buying.
