SPOILERS    SPOILERS   SPOILERS

hi....

i've just finished mafia 2 in about 10-11hrs without rushing ,but i didnt free roam much.

the story is by far the best i've seen in a game for a long time,it really drew me into the world of viito,i felt sorry for vitto at the end when joe was driven off in a different direction to meet his end.

In my opinion the graphics didnt come into it,the story played out very well.

it was a short game, but every minute of story telling was excellent.

the cutscenes were well acted and played out.you got a real feel for the friendship of vitto and joe.

roll on mafia 3................hope joe is still alive......lol

just my opinion

Re: Just finished Mafia 2

While replaying through on Hard (which isn't really 'Hard', just removes enemies from the radar and lowers your ability to soak up bullets) I noticed a slight, but rather obvious mistake.

While you are still in the '40s and the war is still on, a radio news broadcast comes on talking about some bombing victory.

It starts off with an American news reader saying something like, "Engalnd's national anthem is God Save The Queen, but they are singing a different song today..."

It wasn't the national anthem during World War II fellas!

You would think the writers of this game could have come up with a more original ideas rather than ripping off a Hollywood movie. I was very disapointed with the storyline to say the least.

All I can say is Goodfellas - fair enough if you are taking to take ideas and elaborate them but they just literally copied them.

The 'coincidences' I noticed:

Selling stolen cigarettes from a vehicle.

Crime family bosses instructing their gangs that drugs was strictly a no-go area.

Joe Pesci played a character called Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas.

The informant was called Henry, Henry Hill , the main character, ratted out in Goodfellas

The betrayal of Jimmy - in the film Jimmy Conway was betrayed by Henry Hill.

well first of all if you followed the development at all you would know that the devs were hugely influenced by the goodfellas when making this story. The first mafia which was a story based more around romanticism(more like the godfather) and the sequel is based more on the real mafia life, the dark and gritty stuff (goodfellas). It's not like they tried to hide their influences from goodfellas, they said in numerous interviews they wanted it to be more like goodfellas than any other mobster movie.

Secondly aside from the last three things you said, the references/coincidences are bull.

1. selling stolen ciggarettes isn't a goodfellas thing, it's a mafia thing. It's what they did in the 40s and 50s it's how they made a large chunk of their money. To not have this in the game considering the time period it's set in would be very dissapointing, this is one of the biggest incomes for the sicilian mafia at that time in america (historical fact).

2. Again, in the 50s and 60s drugs were a no go area for the new york families, it was highly frowned upon because of changes in the law at that time which meant the prison sentence was extremely severe and it was not worth the risk for the money you would make, again a historical fact about the mafia, not something specific to goodfellas.

Also, there's no such thing as a completely original story. Every single story is a re-hash of something else, some are just a lot less obvious than others. But look hard enough and you'll find links/coincidences/references for any story.

I won't quote, 'cos it'll get ridiculous.

I have to agree with Fulcrum, they aren't ripping off Goodfellas.

Drugs were a no-go in The Godfather too (something carried over from Mario Puzo's book as well).

As for the names, really?  Come on.

Joe/Joseph is a common name for Italian-Americans and indeed many other Catholic communities.

Joe Pesci as you mentioned, Joe DiMaggio, even Joey Tribbiani!

DeVito is from the Italian word 'vita' meaning 'life'.

The main character in Mafia II is called Vito, which is short for 'Vittorio'.  It might have the same derivation (I can't be bothered to check), but I doubt it was a concerted effort to shoe-horn in both parts of Pesci's character name in Goodfellas.

If the main character ratted out his family and went into witness protection, I might accuse them of borrowing too heavily, but that didn't happen.

That did happen at the end of the first Mafia game (in case you wondered who that unfortunate soul was in chapter 14 - Stairway To Heaven), but even then it wasn't a rip-off.

EDIT:  I was totally wrong!  Just realised the main character in Mafia was called TOMMY Angelo.

It's a conspiracy I tells ya!

Re: Just finished Mafia 2

hello, i got Mafia 2 and I have enjoyed it a lot. I think it's just great. I have a little problem though i hope you might be able to help me with. I bought the game on Ebay (2nd hand) for economical reasons. Now i find that the downloadble content has already been downloaded previously and I cannot access to it via releasing the 3 codes i already have. Is there any other way i can reach this extra content? For instance new codes etc? thanks for reading this. ;-)

Re: Just finished Mafia 2

I wouldn't say it was excellent but I did enjoy it but I wouldn't buy any of the Downlodable content as I don't think it will worth playing up again, I only played again after completing it to get platinum.

Now your nightmare comes to life.
