Have DICE / EA now proper sausaged us up the rear?

EA added the online pass to more and more of its games over the years and now its pretty much standard, with many other game developers going that route too.

Now, by looking at the shear amount of paid for servers in the server browser it seems they are onto another big £££ winner, which will probably be attempted by other developers.

What will this mean for us the gamers tho?

Cheaper price at launch? Cheaper DLC? More DLC?

Nah, nah and yeah.

Cheaper launch price and cheaper DLC would both lose money for EA - sure, they'll've made money on the private servers but that doesn't mean they then feel they can lose a bit by cutting prices for consumers.

If people are happy to buy the game full price, there's no reason for EA to lower it. If people are happy to buy the DLC full price, there's no reason to lower it. If people are happy to buy DLC, there's reason to make more of it.

How is this in anyway about EA or DICE sausaging us.

They have provided a service, and people are paying to use it. If we were not willing to hand over money to use what they offer, they wouldnt do it.

Not to mention that paying for a server is a new addition, so of course a lot of people tried it out, but that does not mean that it will generate enough money in the long term for it to be viable for all game developers to implement.

Also PC has had rented servers for ages yet they still have free servers.

Re: Have DICE / EA now proper sausaged us up the rear?

I got the digital download copy from the store, I think it was 49.99, bought the DLC, rented several servers one was a 3 month. In total i've spent well over 120 GBP on BF3, and I haven't finished yet. I'll be getting all the DLC no matter the cost. I love the game. It helped me stop smoking, collecting the medals *48 out of 50 now :smileyhappy: * kept me busy and worked better than the stupid patches or the rancid mouth spray from the chemist.

For me the game is value for money, especially considering the cash i've saved in smokes.

What, why would you buy it at that price?

I feel the same, I have ploughed 277 hours into this game for £45. No other media gives you that much entertainment time for the same price.

Of course nobody wants to see costs going up, but i think these descrete transactions (DLC and servers) Is better than a complete RRP overhaul.

im pleased the op has the sense to see where game developers are going with this rent a server idea, games like dc universe were a huge flop because of monthly subscriptions and no matter how much i hate cod dice have stooped to a new low in my mind but then since bfbc2 theyve released moh and bf3 both a huge step backwards from the bfbc2 gameplay fun.

Exactly, why are game devs / publishers gonna pay to run various map and mode and settings servers when they can get people to pay for it.

Being able to have a ranked or unranked server with your own little tweeks and choices of maps and modes is what a lot of people like.

I don't think Warhawk would have lasted as long as it did without that option.
