Re: James Cameron's Avatar - The Official Thread

Our cinema aren't doing 3D, even though it does have 3D projectors (I have watched a few 3D movies there). I'm glad though, my eyes get sore and I have only watched about 1hr 30 movies in 3D before. 3 hours would kill me.

Just saw it, loved it.

Add it to the few 3D movies done well.

Ditto... I'd go as far to say it was my favourite movie of the year.. A tad predictable, but show me a romantic action war epic on an alien planet that isn't.....

Re: James Cameron's Avatar - The Official Thread

Average story and even the action scenes weren't that great but the overall experience was unmatched. I've never seen anything in 3D that looked so good. After a couple minutes the feeling of 'we're watching a movie' disappeared and we were right there with the characters on an alien planet.

One of the most amazing experiences ever! It's going to make non-3D movies seem very ordinary.

Re: #DRe: James Cameron's Avatar - The Official Thread

It's the irony of this film that if you see it in 3D you'll be amazed, but if you see it in 2D you'll be dissapointed. The movie itself, imo, is not Cameron's finest, or even his second- or third-finest. Visually it looks stunning, but unfortunately I just think the movie wasn't really fleshed out enough, which is dissapointing for a 2.5 hour film. The Na'vi are too much of an alien race to make you feel any sympathy for the numerous indigenous populations whose homes were uprooted and demolished by Western civilisation. With some hammy moments to boot, it actually falls flat in my opinion. It's obviously a film that appeals to the masses, but there was a lot of room for a more intellectual side. It isn't the most sympathy-drawing of scenes when some of the Na'vi get crushed by their own giant tree (it's more giggle-worthy), and I just feel sorry for Michelle Rodriguez for having to say the lamest, weakest swear word ever invented, "freakin' daisycutters!". You could see her looking around afterwards like "did I really just say that?"

It wasn't helped by Zoe Saldana (the main Na'vi chick) crying or getting mad at the drop of a hat. Yes, I know, in some cultures people have plenty of empathy for the land and their home, but it happens too often in films this "girl loves boy, boy does something wrong and girl hates him but forgives him later" thing.

All in all, the film is not going to come close to Titanic in the Oscars race (it picked up 11)... it'll probably win in the categories for Visual / Special effects and possibly Best Cinematography (unless it gets excluded by definition), and maybe Cameron might pick up best director, but Sam Worthington won't get a best actor nomination and it won't get nominated for best picture due to the storyline.

I'm probably being too scathing, I did enjoy it, and it's at least a Blu-Ray rental again, maybe a purchase. It's just a big dumb action movie, and that's ok. But if you're after a big-name action movie that actually has something for the thinking audience, The Dark Knight trumps it.

Re: #DRe: James Cameron's Avatar - The Official Thread

Yeah, the movie does seriously suffer a major case of "Dances with Nantang"...  (ie: viperwolves, for those who failed to see what I did there.. :smileytongue: )

But still.... I never felt bored, and I never yawned... and many of these three hour epics do that (Lord of the Rings Trilogy aside)

I didn't like the first two Harry Potter movies at all (puts on flame suit)... and despite being a big fan of Peter Jackson (yes, even before LOTR) I didn't like King Kong at all.... You could put the Kong/dino fight into a 5 min youtube clip, and that's all you need to see..... Da Vinci code, well, I've tried to watch it twice and have actually fallen asleep both times...

Overall enjoyed the movie, more specifically the start and the end of it, didnt care at all for the Na'vi the story we wouldve better if there was more focus on the humans imo.

If you watch you must watch in 3d 8/10

my brother says otherwise. he saw it in 2d then again in 3d and he said it suffered dramatically. he said all the detail was sucked from the movie. at his recommendation i saw it in 2d and i absolutely enjoyed the whole thing.

Predictable? yes. but i found that even though i could see what was bound to happen, the key thing is that I WANTED it to happen.
