Problem playing Universal/Paramount Blu Ray Discs

Hi everybody,

I did a quick search and didn't find anything relating to this problem, so if it has been discussed, I apologise.

I recently bought Forgetting Sarah Marshall on Blu Ray and was annoyed to find that the disc wouldn't play, after having bought around 80 blu rays, this is the first that wouldn't play out of the box. Upon looking closely, it has fine scratches on it which appear to be the culprit.

So I drive back to JB and they don't have another copy, so I drive to another store and pick it up from there, get it home and the dude at the store forgot to unlock the box, so I do some strategic snips and get the disc out, and it doesn't play either!

After searching around and not finding anything relating to "forgetting Sarah Marshall won't play on ps3", I finally get lucky doing a search for Universal discs which won't play. I find a couple of posts talking about problems with Universal and Paramount discs and thank god, one has the solution!

It turns out that for some unknown reason most Universal and Paramount discs will not work when there are too many storage devices connected to the PS3!?!? I have no idea how this is related, but I have a launch PS3 and so I usually have an SD card and a Memory Stick in the card reader, and at least 1 external HDD connected. I haven't fully tested it but I think a 4th storage device kills it, when I have a USB memory stick connected, the disc won't play. With the SD card and the USB stick removed, the disc plays fine!

From the post I found the guy reported these discs as having the problem:

Universal (these are all the Universal title I own, so none work):
Heroes S1
Heroes S2
King Kong
The Incredible Hulk
The Hulk
Wanted
Hellboy II
The Thing
Land of the Dead
The 40 Year Old Virgin
Serenity

Paramount (a few Paramount titles I own still load fine, these don't):
The Godfather
Event Horizon
Cloverfield
Beowulf
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Iron Man

Now obviously Forgetting Sarah Marshall should be added to this list.

Why does this happen? It is the first time I have run in to this problem and I use my PS3 as my media hub and frequently have loads of storage devices connected to it.

Who's fault is this? PS3 or the way the discs are made?

Anyway sorry for the uber long commentary, but I felt really annoyed by the end of the process and hopefully this can save some frustration for anyone else encountering the issue.

[ Edited ]

I've had this problem lately, so I've been watching blu-rays from my home theater pc instead of my PS3. I had searched, but didn't find much except about cleaning the lens.

I finally bought a dvd cleaning disc today, but that didn't do anything. I have the latest update on my PS3 as well. So I decided to search again for "universal" titles and issues with the PS3, and I found this thread  .

I have an sd card, a cf card, and two usb sticks plugged in. I removed the 2 usb sticks and my universal titles now load!!!!! Why The Face?!

So, thanks for posting! :smileyvery-happy:

I have never encountered that error...generally all

Re: Problem playing Universal/Paramount Blu Ray Discs

Hey there,

I guess the easy work around would be to not have multiple unnecessary external storage devices plugged at any one time.

Any storage medium attached to the PS3 will draw a certain amount of power to retain connection to the console.

Being that it appears to be only Paramount and Universal BD's, they may have some certain kind of coding that requires more system resources to be employed whilst in use.

Re: Problem playing Universal/Paramount Blu Ray Discs

No, you do not need to be signed in to the PSN to play Blu-ray movies.

Do any other Blu-ray discs work (e.g. games, or other movies)? Just want to rule out the possibility of a Blu-ray laser diode failure.

Technology is wasted on the ignorant.
