It was beginning to look like DVD all over again there for a while. If there was ever any testiment to just how big the Star Wars movie franchise was, it was in that DVD didn't feel like a legitimised format until the Original Saga came out, after which VHS died a very quick death. In the same way, Star Wars is perhaps the biggest missing piece in the Blu-Ray library, along with the definitive Lord of the Rings releases and other cult films like the Indiana Jones movies, Apocalypse Now, Pulp Fiction and more.
No date has been announced yet, but they did say in the near future, which may indicate they'll release a 2D version and the 3D films will come later (of which I have zero interest). I also hope they release the Original Trilogy as a stand-alone set, that way the cost is halved and you can continue believing Episodes I-III don't exist.

So seeing as they have made changes to the movies with every re-release, I wonder what they will add this time...

great I wonder how George Lucas
will degrade his films this time
by trying to "improve them".
Love the orginal trilogy (well the first 2 films)
but my definitive copy is still my thx
VHS copy
.
HOPEFULLY he does not alter
the original theatrical release in any way.

Mace: *cuts of palpatine's arm* say what again, I dare you, I double dare you mutha f***er!
Palpatine: What?
or the alternate version
Anakin: Oh man I shot Jar-Jar in the face
Mace: Why the f*** d'you do that? Actually, stupid question
Anakin: I dunno, you must've driven over some kind of space bump
Mace: I never hit no mutha f***in' space bump
Anakin: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do it
Mace: Well look at this f***in' mess man, we on a coruscant city traffic lane in broad daylight!
Anakin: I can't believe it man...
Mace: Well believe it now mutha f***er we gotta get this speeder of the road, y'know Jedi tend to notice sh*t like you're driving a speeder drenched in f***in' blood

You beat me to it again, /shakes fist. I found the infomation Here & I for 1 am very happy they are bringing these movies out, I just hope they don't cash cow them & bring out like 5 different versions (which they are bound to do)
I wonder how their 3D version is going....

Personally I wouldn't mind a multitude of versions, after all you're not forced to buy all of them and you can pick the one you want. Ideally there should be a set of the Original Saga, digitally restored including only original scenes made for the movies back then, with all editing removed that references the prequel trilogy. In other words, fine if you keep Jabba the Hutt in Episode IV, at least that scene was made for the film at the time, but no Greedo shoots first, no celebration scenes on Naboo or Coruscant and definately no Hayden Christensen in Return of the Jedi.

You know, I didn't mind most of the changes between the original theatrical VHS and 20th ann movies, as it was largely a case of using technology to polish the movies up, although we all agree the Greedo change was unnecessary... and I was never a fan of the Jabba scene nor the CGI musical at Jabba's palace myself.
What I really disliked was the dialogue and scene changes made to the DVD release after the release of the prequel trilogy. He tries to tell us this is his ultimate vision of the series, but in reality he is just trying to iron over the ballsup he made of the prequel trilogy, by making changes to the OT that are less conflicting with the prequels..
My personal hates... the huge dialogue change between Vader and Palpatine in ESB where Lucas seemed to decide that all viewers should now watch the prequels first, so he will do away with the mystery of Vader being Luke's father... and secondly as rcoll mentioned, Hayden Christianson in the final scene of Jedi.. why? why? why?... curse you Lucas, there was no need to remove Sebastian Shaw from it, nor logic for doing so.
What's the bet with the bluray he decides to digitally put Ewan McGregor into the OT... maybe even change the actors for Owen and Beru..
