The Dark Knight Rises

Yes the third Batman film has a name now. Not entirely sure it's such a good thing for clarity calling your film the same title as the previous one but with an extra word on the end, but whatever. Just as long as it's not a brand recognition to get people into the seats.

There are also two new revelations, one good and one perhaps good or bad depending on your point of view. The good news is the film will be shot in 2D, retainign the use of IMAX cinematography. Say what you will, but 3D is a curse to movie storytelling. The end result is usually an effectsy film with all style and no substance.

The other news is that the villain in the film will NOT be the Riddler. Perhaps this was obvious given how Nolan grew a strong bond with Heath Ledger during filming of The Dark Knight, and casting the Riddler with similar mind game traits would only draw parallels between the two villains. At this rate too I highly doubt Nolan would give in to pressure and introduce Catwoman, a role which has been attached by the media to Angelina Jolie, who imo is one of the most overrated actresses who'd probably command that the film be about her and be her star vehicle.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

[ Edited ]

I'm very interested to see who Tom Hardy will be playing now that Nolan has declared that The Riddler won't be the villain (smart move considering we've already seen a major villain play a cerebral game against Batman in The Dark Knight), that is, if Hardy's playing a villain at all.

I know they're currently looking for a female lead, it'll just be interesting to see what character they go with. I like the idea of Catwoman (I don't like the idea of Fishlips Jolie playing the character though) because I suspect they'd go with her more grounded approach as a catburglar instead of crazy resurrected cat-lady as she was in Batman Returns, plus Catwoman's the closest Bruce Wayne has ever gotten to true love.

But, they do have another strong female character to use in the form of Talia Al Ghul, daughter of Ra's, which could also be used to further tie all 3 films together.

It may not have even started filming yet, but I'm officially hyped. Nolan's yet to make a bad film in my honest opinion.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

It is a good call not having the riddler in this one as his persona is a little to simular to that of the Joker. (as stated by many above) Catwoman as the villan would be awesome, but Jolie would not, there are so many better options out there... Either way even if they do go with Jolie, I am looking forward to the new Batman movie. I agree with you as well that Nolan still hasn't made a bad movie.

Sadly, those who take over franchises he has directed in, have... so here's hoping he holds onto the reigns..

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Or he takes the "No brains, All brawn, All action" approach and goes "Bane".

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Im glad in hindsight its not the Riddler.

I also dont mind catwoman ain the film.

But to be honest what has made these Batman films

so brilliant is the realism.

So I want a villian who is real..

Maybe Hush ? or I think it may be cool to see

Ra's al Ghul (possibly having not died in the first film)

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

The thing is, it's kinda pointless to just pull a name out of a hat for no good reason, we all know that Nolan will pick villains that tie into the story, not just pick out two or three more of the dirty dozen and get them to go do their thing. So the real question here is, where is Batman at right now?

Batman is on the run - we all know that the story will revolve around Batman being hunted while simultaneously trying to clear his name. Here's the logical turn of events:

- The Mob Returns: With Batman on the run and out of the picture, the mob rule which has been a key factor in the first two films will come out of hiding

- Police choose a new champion: It's probably Gordan will do everything he can to aid Batman, but the rest of the police force will work with another masked vigilante, who may end up doubling up as the next villain. Somebody like Deadshot or Hush could work well here, or some other gun-for-hire

With this in mind it creates a logical stage for Nolan to bring in new characters, namely villains and villains posing as heroes. This is kinda why Catwoman doesn't work, in the comics Batman and Robin could be called upon to stop Catwoman stealing a priceless artefact but at this stage of the films should Batman really be concerned with a low-level femme fatale fortune hunter?

This is also why Spiderman 3 sucked. Venom and Sandman really had nothing to do with each other, and they didn't add much in combination to the storyline. Sandman's only storyline importance was to show off their sand CGI, nothing more. Bottom line is, introduce villains that make sense with the storyline, not as an act of fan service. Thankfully Nolan's proved his worth with the League of Shadows in the first film.

You forgot... and to retcon an existing back story already established in Spidey 1... :smileywink:

Ah retcons... how the movie and comic universes love them.... *stares viciously at the Lucasverse...

Don't buy in the Batman & Robin or Batman: Arkham Asylum representations of Bane. One of those two was worse than the other, guess which?

In the comics he was one of the few villains that has bested Batman with a combination of intelliegence and brute strength.

It was something he had to be concerned about in The Long Halloween, Catwoman was always sniffing around and sometime actively attacking members of  the Falcone crime family mostly because she was (implied to be) Carmine Falcone's illegitimate daughter. So she could definitely play into the mob angle in some form.
