Joining friends in lobbies query?

I know its a propa nOOb question but if you have a friend say playing free for all  can you join him using the 'join friend' option or if he sends you an invite while in game or at the lobby? As ive of it stoping you joining people on your FL to stop boosting etc i suppose,but im sure in the past ive joined a friend b4?
