It's about time for a new TV

Hey Gang!

I seem to recall a post from a few months ago about HD TVs. (Is that the group term for all flat screens? LED/LCD/Plasma... or should I be saying something else?)

Anyway, the 50~cm CRT I'm using at the moment just doesn't cut it when I'm playing PS3.

(I used to have a 50" Plasma, but had to get rid of it when we moved, due to size and wall mount requirements)

I know TVs are a lot cheaper now than they've ever been - when's the best time to buy, and what are your experiences with different brands?

I'd probably be content with a 40"/42".

If you're on a budget (like I was - plus the measurements meant I had 4mm clearance each end) then the Sony Bravia KDL40CX520 is being knocked out some places for about $500 (as it is an old model), David Jones have it, some Big Ws will but DS and JB have sold out.

It's 40" full HD, backlit LCD, not 3D but has inbuilt networking and online features.

Straight out the box the picture settings need tweaking but once set up, it's a mighty fine set for the price.

If you've no real limits on budget then go for the biggest, shiniest, whizz bang ***** you can find, then hug it.

Re: It's about time for a new TV

The best time to buy a new TV in Australia, and I'm assuming it would be the same in New Zealand, would be around the end of April early May.

Why then you might ask?

Well every year in early Jan they have the huge Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Every manufacture shows off it new models that will start hitting the stores in Aus/NZ around June.

So after the new models are announced, prices for the current stock are starting to be reduced, if you wait till around every April /May you get the runnout stock a Highly reduced prices, basically so they can just get rid of the last of them, and can empty the store houses ready for the new stock.

There is a cavet to doing this though.

If you get a D.O.A {Dead on arrival] TV, it will be highly unlikely that you will be able to get a replacement unit, you will be offered repair under warranty, or, possibly a replacement with the newer model, a ta reduced price, but with you paying the difference, which could be quit a bit.

Re: It's about time for a new TV

if price and size is something not to look at, then think about lcd/led 70" Full HD Quattron LED LCD TV $4496, only thing is that its not 3D. or a Samsung 64" Full HD 3D SMART Plasma TV $2496. but the Sony KDL40HX750 is what i would go for if i wanted another 40" sony tv

A 40" LCD/HDTV will probably be more than enough if your eyes/screen distance is approximately

9/10 feets. Here's a quick description of my own tv that i've bought from slightly less than $700

dollars 2 years ago, which, should be alot cheaper by now (if still available?).

*KDL-40EX400

-Bravia engine 2,

-Full hd 1080p,

-140,000:1 dynamic contrast,

-60hz refresh rate,

-4 hdmi inputs + 1 hdmi/pc input,

-Bravia sync,

-Etc...

Re: It's about time for a new TV

I bought the Sony 3D 46" EX720 in a run out sale at the end of April for $1000.

It's OK once calibrated to D6500k, but I'm not a fan of the edge lighting as it's inconsistent across the screen, even at 3/10

I would much rather of had full backighting, but Sony now only do that for the top models.

Plus accessing Internet TV like iView or SBS is different [clunky program selection once you are at the sites] in comparison to using the PS3 or a PC, so it is pretty much a redundant feature.

Re: It's about time for a new TV

I weighed up the middle/upper middle Sony and Samsung LED lit LCDs vs the flagship Panasonic Plasmas...

I went with the Plasma, our old 42 inch is a Panasonic Plasma and I've now had a 50 inch VT30 for six months... very happy with it...
