How do you put something into the new equipment sockets?

Well assuming you have collected exobits and then made the exobyte for the socket using the R&D crafting machine, once you have the exobyte and the plan from the vendor, just press square on the exobyte and then drop it on the armour you want it in.

I'd built the parts but couldn't see how to place them on the amour.

yep and also make sure your armour is un-equipped first - forgot to addd that bit in.
