Does anyone else think that paying $90 for the game then $100 for 12 month subscription is a bit steep, looked forward to game but sheez.

I realize that subs are normal for mmo's but I bet that most (read all) upgrades to the game will be dlc at a cost, most online mmos change without the extra dosh. Is the game worth it or not is what I wonder or am I better off buying Mass Effect 2 and another game for the same cost?

The new content won't be dlc that you have to pay for:
President of Sony Online Entertainment John Smedley said that if you decide to play DC Universe Online, you won't have to worry about any additional costs besides your regular monthly fee. Smedley told Eurogamer that they will be offering free monthly upgrades of additional content and weekly patches if things need to be fixed right away, instead of big DLC packages you have to purchase additionally. The new content for PC and PS3 will launch within a day or two of each other, even though it takes longer for updates to be approved on the PS3 platform. (They'll hold all the PC upgrades until the equivalent one is ready.)
"But the plans are about a month out you can start expecting major pieces of content and major new features to come in," he said. "We'll be adding all kinds of cool stuff. We're not quite ready to reveal what our after-launch plans are yet. Needless to say we have a lot of content we're in QA on that players haven't seen yet."
This echoes what DCUO Game Director Chris Cao's told Techland about seeing tons more feats and other weapons in the near future. Smedley said that the monthly fee made the company feel obligated to provide free constant upgrades and new features. They should: The game costs $14.99 a month to play on top of the $49.99 you'll have to plop down for the PC version or the $59.99 it costs for the PS3 version. While this is common practice for PC players to pay a monthly fee, it's relatively new for PS3 players to have to cough up change continuously instead of pay once in a while for DLC. Smedley, who hopes to have the game running for "five, ten years," believes the choices within the game and the amount of new material you get each month will attract console gamers and keep them playing - and paying.
In my opinion the game is worth the $75 I paid for it - myself and my kids have been playing this a lot (and I mean a lot) since picking it up just over a week ago. If you enjoy playing Borderlands / InFamous / MMOs, there's a good chance you'll like it. If games like that are boring to you, then give it a miss.

The Price is fair to be honest all we have to pay for is subscription, we don't have to pay for any extras or DLC because they're free so it is fair and when playing an mmo you kinda expect a price.
Maybe one day in the future give or take a few years, it may become free just like Lord of the Rings online has become but till that day we pay the price and get constant DLC and Patches and extra content and support.
