Really? You like DMC2? It's the worst in the series and almost killed it completely had DMC3 not come along.
DMC2 isnt just the worst DMC, it must be one of the worst Capcom games.
Anyway, I felt a little let down by DMC4, certainly still better than most action games on the market but could have been so much more. Here's why...
(WARNING - Spoilers!)
1. The immense backtracking. Now, I don't always mind going into a familar area and discovering something new about it, but that did not happen in DMC4 with Dante. His campaign is basically going through EVERYTHING Nero just went through, bar minor changes. There should have been a whole bunch of completely new areas, backtracking this much shows lazy design on Capcom's behalf.
I agree with that, but that is not just in DMC4, all DMC series have that issue, At DMC1 wasnt that much, but at 2-3-4 is so much that becomes annoying.
At least 4 is a better game than 2and3
2. Nerfing Dante. Switching styles may be great and all, but they lack the moves and customisation options that DMC3 had. He was clearly a side-project compared to Nero, who doesn't get too many moves anyway (But Exceed is awesome, and I feel that should be in the next DMC games, which is certainly going to happen).
Dante except the weapons has the same moves & styles with DMC3 there are only few changes, I prefer DMC4 dante tho.
3. Devil Arm. Allows for a bit too many 'cool' sequences that negate skill and cause immense damage to bosses. Now, you may argue that it takes skill to stun them anyway, but hurting a boss is generally what is done in games, and the player should not be awarded too much until the boss is dead and buried.
When i started playing the game i called it "Monkey Arm" but i like it now, would like to see dante with something similar.
4. Bosses. Very nice designs, smooth and cool. But too few of them! I certainly don't want 50 bosses who are crud in every single way (Like DMC2), but Capcom could have done more. What makes it worse is that we were promised "More bosses than the previous DMC games combined." I didn't expect them to fully live up to that standard, but they could have done more than the same amount DMC1 had. Oh, and Nero should have killed Agnus, not comedy Dante.
5. The characters and plot. This really bugged me, no explanation is given as to why Nero has a demonic arm, save references that he is of Sparda's blood. That to me opens up a whole can of worms that Capcom could have explored, but then promptely push it aside in order to save the girl. Kyrie annoyed me a bit, she didn't do or say too much, too wishy-washy compared to Lady or Trish. What was done with Lady was daft, they pushed a likeable character to the sidelines, much like Dante, and give him little depth, in fact all the previous characters who are referenced or shown up in the game are generally given little to do. Gloria was the most pitiful waste in terms of the cast, I was looking forward to duelling her but nope, it's just Trish. Typical.
As for the villians, not bad, but not as cool as Vergil or Arkham. Credo was just misguided and more of a tragic hero anyway, Sanctus was a dissapointing final boss. In DMC3 we had the epic battle between blood brothers, in DMC4 we fight some old guy who wants to do something or other. Agnus was easily the best villian in this game, whoever played him rocked. The Savior being used to conquer the world isn't really that interesting to be honest, okay he's a bit tough, but we could have had a better endgame for the villian, but chances of that were pushed aside for an anime-plot.
6. Weapons. Lucifer, Gilgamesh, Rebellion, Red Queen, Devil Bringer. I could care less about guns, but they could have added so many more to the mix, even ones that were similar to ones in the previous games! Where's our Nevan or Agni + Rudra and Cerberus fix? Or the numerous other potential close combat weapons out there? A pole arm for instance would be ace.
Let it be said that I think DMC4 is a great game, but DMC3 is still the pinnicle of the series, and I hope it does not fall into decline like Megaman did. If DMC5 avoids the flaws of DMC4 and builds on the strengths of the 3 good DMC games then newbies and fans alike will be pleased into a joygasm.
I'll agree with all that, i'll just add that IMO After DMC1 , DMC4 is the best DMC
But Capcom is really starting to getting out of truck and aiming just for money and not quality, especially from the time that decided to go multi platform the quality and capcom style , went out of the window.
