Digital Comics Q&A

[ Edited ]

A while ago we asked you for your questions to be put to the Digital Comics Team.

Today I present you with the questions direct from the guys, hope you enjoy and apologies if your question wasn't answered.

1.             You've mentioned a few times on the blog about an update for the reader that will allow us to delete comics without having to connect the PSP to a PC. Is there any more information you can share about when this update could be expected and any other things you are adding or improving?

The new version of the reader will be with us any day now. QA are carrying out a few final checks before they give us the okay to release. Other than the ability to delete comics we have added a whole host of other tweaks including:

  • A quick way to read the next issue in a series (if it is in your collection).
  • "By Publisher" has been added to the Browse Collection filters.
  • The database system has been overhauled and is now much faster to update and access.
  • Improved right to left manga support
  • The music player now supports more formats like AAC & MP4

We’ll post all the new features once we are given a release date. Virtually all of the features were based on the feedback in the forums and on Twitter so please keep the suggestions coming

2.             Will you ever do discounts for people to buy bundles of comics? For example money off if you buy the first 4 issues?

We are very keen to support this. I think we’ll be hearing more about it very soon.

3.             Are you ever going to release the other comics to the Warriors Series.

The Warriors is provided by iVerse, so it is up to them to deliver the content. We have asked and they are positive that more are coming.

4.             When will the service be released to the rest of EU and North America?

We have a date but it’s still not 100% confirmed so I don’t want to promise anything. As you know we were originally expecting these new stores at the beginning of the year. However it seems that switching on a store is more complicated than it seems! We do have some very exciting local publishers lined up for the EU and our plan is to also release our English catalogue where the licence allows.

Note: It has since been announced that the Digital Comics service will not roll out to any further stores.

5.             Are there any plans for a reader on other PlayStation platforms?

We would obviously love to be on the PS3. That is all I can say at the moment.

6.             Are there any other release information for mangas beside Vampire Hunter D?

We are in discussion with a number of Manga publishers so we hope to have some more soon!

7.             Have you or are you looking at bringing more game related comics to the service, for example Resistance and God of War?

We have Sonic, Army of Two & Dragon Age on the store already. It’s obviously something we’d like to see more of as our audience are all gamers!

8.          [Suggestion] Is there any chance you could get the PS3 to allow access to Digital Comic and transfers to the PSP

There is a chance, but not at this stage.

9.          If / when this service is released in other parts of the region. Will it then be a localised version?

Our aim is for there to be a mix of content: Comics from local publishers, some localised content from international publishers and ideally an English language area within the store.

Re: Digital Comics Q&A

This just gets better and better hope to see bundles soon. I may never use my PSP to play games at this point so many comics to get.

Re: Digital Comics Q&A

Haven't played a game in quite awhile now, reading the comics instead. Software updates have been great too.

A couple of questions...

1) What happened the next releases for IDW's Transformers: Nefarious & Star Trek: McCoy and the Movie Adapt?

Great to hear about the bundles. Buying each issue one at a time, way too much "back" "add to cart" "continue shopping".

2) So how about the unlucky ones of us have already bought the whole series (both Transformers Prequels, Star Trek Countdown) already at $1.99 each? Will there be some sort of credit to our "wallets"? Or do we just get to "take it in the wallet"?

Re: Digital Comics Q&A

If I'm not mistaken, you should still be able to purchase the contents of a bundle individually. I guess that'll have to be your solution if you have previously purchased part of a series.

Re: Digital Comics Q&A

It seems that my 2nd question was not clear enough...so here it is:

I have already bought each issue of the following series: Transformers ROTF: Alliance, Transformers ROTF: Defiance & Star Trek: Countdown. I bought them each individually for $1.99 each (4 issues = $8). So, now these series are bundled at $2.99, I paid $5 more for each series (a total of $15 more) than someone who buys the bundles today.

To me, this seems to penalize the loyal Sony/Playstation customers who jumped onboard early on, bought all the issues and helped to make the Digital Comics a successful business venture.

To not offer a credit or some type of loyalty bonus is a bad business choice. If this how it is going to be, I will no longer talk up the Playstation Digital Comics at my local comic shop and not continue to purchase any more.

Re: Digital Comics Q&A

I don't know that you will see anything like that happen crwlydad. These bundles are likely being looked at like an item that is on sale, so if you have bought it before the sale you are likely out of luck. If you went and bought a comic out of a comic store, and went back a month later to find it reduced in the clearance bin you wouldn't expect to get money back would you?

It would be nice to maybe see some sort of reward system in place for people buying a lot of comics of the store or something, and that has been talked about before with snowcrashed. How anything like that could be done though I really don't know.

Re: Digital Comics Q&A

Upon reconsideration, since I like the portability of my PSP and added safety against damage for my tradepaperbacks and single issues only transport from the comic shop to home, I will still continue to buy Playstation Digital Comics. If they could get Dark Horse over here with Star Wars titles, I'd have to buy several more 8GB memory sticks.

The is the deal: I mainly buy comics from three "franchises" : Star Wars, Star Trek & Transformers. I buy the single issues as they are released, and buy the trade paperbacks as well. Sometimes I have added some Batman, X-Men & Indiana Jones story arcs and adaptations. I have 263 downloads since 2/16/2010 (I'm sure that other users may make my downloads number small in comparision). About 30 are the various free comics, and about another 30 are some DC & Marvel issues that I don't have in trade paperback (yet).  So, in 4.5 months I have bought 230 issues of comics, of which all the Star Trek & Transformers (about 200), I already purchased in paper form. With nearly all issues being $1.99 that's about $450.

Back to my local comic shop discussion. No I wouldn't expect to to get my money back, but I get other perks. I have been given variant covers, free copies of not-free-comics, a layaway for a few $100 hardcover omnibuses, special ordering anything, in print, that I want and a set discount amount on everything I buy. I would get this discount on the clearance items and on even back issues (a couple years old) for the cover price as well. The comic shop is also have an 11th Anniversary sale for the next 2 weeks. Since, I am a loyal customer and local comic shop does things to reward my loyalty, I continue to purchase my comics there.

Okay, so I bought the series before it went on sale. Happens with many items I want. However, these day, most stores have "rewards cards",  "discount cards" or "discount/promo codes".  It would just be a common way for Sony/Playstation to reward loyal customers. I have "Transformers: The Game" & "Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen: The Game" in my PSP case. The Transformers: The Game is a "Greatest Hits", so many people bought it, and I could get it for less. On several games I have been part of the ones who have made it possible for others to get a deal on the game. It's not like Sony doesn't know the "Greatest Hits", they got the bundles going, so how about some rewards points based on purchases and button on the Playstation store interface "PSP Rewards?"

It is tough economic times everywhere, most people would like a "reason" why a company "deserves" their business.

Re: Digital Comics Q&A

A reward system of some sort would ofcourse be very nice, but I don't think that is something the comics team can do anything about. They don't actually have anything to do with how the PlayStation Store works. If we do ever see any sort of rewards system it's likely to be something that Sony decide to offer across the board on the PlayStation Store.

Just thinking about it now and maybe the first step they would take along those lines is to include comics in PlayStation + but they we need to start offering the PS+ content on the PSP and Media Go first for that to happen. That still wouldn't be the type of thing your looking for though.

Re: Digital Comics Q&A

Hey crwldad, PM me and I'll send you a bunch of comics to say thank you for your continued support for the service!

Ravenblade86 is correct, we don't have any influence on store functionality. We would love to offer some kind of reward system for you guys & girls, maybe in the future it will come.

BTW in meat space if you were to purchase individual issues wouldn't they come out as more expensive than the subsequent TPB?
