Is it possible to do the same level of work with fireworks as you can with Photoshop??

No, Fireworks is really basic work whereas Photoshop is more advanced and in-depth.

I don't know what Fireworks is like once you get used to it but I've used it for like 2 hours and I can say that it is very basic and no way near GIMP let alone Photoshop.

An alternative to Photoshop but this does not mean it is just as good because it isn't. It's still great and the best part is, it is free. You could also try Paint.NET as that is sometimes called an alternative to Photoshop but I haven't tried it.
