A Shadow in Summer (The Long Price bk1) - Daniel Abraham - Main book (kindle)
Grunts - Mary Gentle - Toilet and bath book.

not sure where to head next. I have the 3rd Thomas Covenant book to read (i read the second since the last post) and I have Double Dexter downloaded and ready. Thankfully someone bought my son the latest Skulduggery ( http://www.skulduggerypleasant.co.uk/?locale=UK ) book and its tempting to take a break from the hardcore read and drop into something quick, easy and downright enjoyable.

I usually get a book on science, history and a fiction from the library every week or two. This week I'm reading Brainwashing by Kathleen Taylor which explores and science and psychology of brainwashing and separates myth from empirical fact.

On history I'm reading The Bible Unearthed by Israel Finkelstein and Neil Silberman which pits the stories of the Old Testament against what has been learned through archaeology over the last couple of centuries, Israel being the most dug up and searched archaeological site on the planet. Unsurprisingly the Good Book turns out to be a collection of folk legend, myth, propaganda and nationalism.

And lastly I'm reading Feast of Souls, part one of a fantasy series by Celia Friedman. Jolly good it is too.

The Long price was interesting but easy read. The gstures concept made little difference tot he overal story but it was refreshing to see an author take a risk.

Grunts was a bit meh, Double Dexter was delightfully delicious and Skulduggery remains an enjoyable read.

Ive done :

Foundation (up to 'Second Foundation') http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundation_series  I'm not keen on reading SciFi but this series still holds up in writing quality and depth by todays standards

Rivers of London + Moon over Soho - Ben Aaronovitch http://www.the-folly.com/books/  Personally if you like Urban Fantasy then you can't beat http://www.jim-butcher.com/books/dresden  The Dresden files are superb.

Just finished the Dusk Watchman. the last book inthe Twilight Reign series http://www.tomlloyd.co.uk/start.html  Its a bit of a character based plot but as an overall series it had been well written and another enjoyable read.

I've done some other random ready but nothing noteworthy :/ (Fantasy is a dying genre)

I'm currently reading....

The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty by  A. N. Roquelaure aka Anne Rice (link would probably break house rules)

Finished the Foundation series a while ago. It's a pity that he didn't do any sequels after Foundation and Earth.

At the moment going through the Dune series again. Almost finished Dune Messiah

on the version i'm reading its pretty clear why there wasn't sequels. almost the entire last half of the series was unintended and he only wrote them because of both publisher pressure and fan requests.

Whats your thoughts on Dune and the sequels ? I absolutely loved the film (not the series/new version) Never managed to read the book due to my weird sci-fi contradictions (love watching it / can't read it)

I've also been recommended "Ender" series by Orson Scott Card (i've read all the Alvin Makers)

Currently reading James Herbert's Ash. Not the best JH book by a long mile, difficult to care about the characters and the constant reference to recent historical figures I find annoying.

Disappointing and as a long-time James herbert fan that's hard for me to say.

Lords & Ladies by Terry Pratchett is what I'm reading at the moment. I really like the comedic tone the Discworld books have on the whole fantasy world setting.

So yeah, I'm a huge discworld fan.

The Big Bow Mystery by Israel Zangwell.

Despite being written over a century ago the book still seems fresh to me, and it frequently has me in stitches (deliberately, not because of awful prose). It's only a novella, but it packs quite a lot into its slim frame, as much as any Rebus novel. For fans of locked-room mysteries it's an essential read - it did, after all, spawn a whole genre.

Warm Bodies: by Isaac Marion

I watched the trailer for the film version of this coming out soon and thought it looked really good, so decided to give the book a read.

Loved the characters and the quite different portrayal of the zombies with their own primitive society.

It does seem to rush a little towards the end, but still really enjoyed it.

Currently reading Joe Abercrombie's "Before they are Hanged". The story is good but it seems to be aimed at both adults and children.

I'm really looking forward to Peter V. Brett's "The Daylight War" next month. I read his other books before I read anything by George R.R. Martin but you can really see how G.R.R.M influenced him.

Just finished reading the first two books in the Jack Reacher series, "Killing Floor" and "Die Trying".

Really enjoyed them, love the style of the writing and the characters. Jack Reacher is awesome.

Just about to start the third one, "Tripwire".

Just started reading 'The Long Earth' by Stephen Baxter and Terry Pratchett.

"

1916: the Western Front. Private Percy Blakeney wakes up. He is lying on fresh spring grass. He can hear birdsong, and the wind in the leaves in the trees. Where have the mud, blood and blasted landscape of No Man's Land gone?

2015: Madison, Wisconsin. Cop Monica Jansson is exploring the burned-out home of a reclusive - some said mad, others dangerous - scientist when she finds a curious gadget - a box containing some wiring, a three-way switch and a...potato. It is the prototype of an invention that will change the way Mankind views his world for ever.

And that's an understatement if ever there was one..."
