It was the month of November, and i'd somehow managed to get myself into a massive fanwar between my COD loving friends ( which there were plenty of) and my Battlefield fan boys. When christmas arrived, i had asked for Battlefield 3, part of a series i had never tried before. My friends (as i had expected) all got Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and were probably already getting hacked by some 11 year old with an AK-47. I however, was starting up Battlefield 3 for the first time, wondering whether i had made the right choice.
Although ididn't actually have a PSN account when i first purchased the game ( i was getting one the following week),I began playing through the campaign relatively easily. The story was a bit of a cliche with some american soldier getting accused of assaulting his fellow squadmates, however Sgt.Blackburn is sure his leader Soloman is the real culprit and he is going to set off nuclear bombs in various cities around the world. Straight away I was confronted with the brilliance of Dice's Frostbite 2 engine, which is defanitely up with the likes of Cryengine3. Everything is smooth and Dice have even added destructable buildings to really show off their engine.
So now we skip to a week later, when i first got my PSN account. I found the game mechanic's for online slightly confusing at first, but you'll get used to them in time. I immediately found how different the online is in this game than in COD. The gameplay is much more team-based and you are constantly encouraged to help everyone in some way. Their is a nice sqaud system that allows you to spawn on various members of your sqaud as well as getting additional points for healing, resupplying and reviving them. The modes are essentually the same as COD but theere is rush mode, these games are played on extremely large maps and you really have to use vehicles ( a battlefield speciality) to your advantage.
All in all, I have played essentually every single COD game before and in MW3 i still found that i just got constantly shot in the back and was jeered by some 9 year old kid, however battlefiled felt like you needed a lot more skill than in COD as it takes much longer to level up. But battlefield really felt like the right decision for me to play and i'm really happy that i've beaten the multiplayer and played the game more than anything else. It is only let down by a dull campaign. Otherwise you should definately add this to your FPS collection.
