Marvel vs Capcom 3 - Quick Start Guide

MvC3.jpg

So you just got MvC3 but don't know where to start? Then have a quick read over this :smileyhappy:

First of all insert the disc, there's a mandatory install of about 1.5gig so while that is installing go and make a brew or something as it takes around about 10 minutes. Don't worry about missing the intro as there's a handy screen that follows which requires you to press 'ok' before the intro starts.

Once that's out the way, head straight to the options, if your using a fightstick you'll want to be using Type B which is laid out like this:

(Light)       (Medium)  (Heavy)    (L+M+H)

(Special)  (Assist1)   (Assist2)  (A1+A2)

Now that you have your buttons configured you might want to jump into mission mode or training mode just to get a quick feel for things.

If you have previously played MvC2 then you might be scratching your head at how to switch characters as it's not done in the same way. In MvC3 you have to hold an assist button to switch a character out with one of your partners, or if you just want to call them to do an attack for you then simply tap one of the assist buttons instead.

Super jumps - You will NEED to use these, they carry you much higher into the air than normal and are performed by tapping down right before jumping, extremely useful for trying to avoid projectile spam.

Special moves - while in training or mission mode, hit start to view the command list, try and practice a few of these, once you can do a few of them you'll find that most characters moves are performed in similar ways (down, down-forward, forward + L/M/H for a projectile for example)

Hyper combos - You'll notice at the bottom of the screen you have bar, this will fill as you attack, most super moves require just one bar but a couple may use 3 full bars (or even 5!) These are extremely powerful attacks that can often fill the screen! If you have 3 bars of super you can hit A1+A2 to unleash a devastating attack from all 3 of your characters at the same time! Alternatively you can look at the command list and perform an individual one. It's worth noting that if you do an individual one and you have seen it hit, you can cancel it towards the end by inputting another super move of one of your partners and then they will jump in and continue the hyper combo with their own super!!!

Combos basic! - This is where the fun begins, if your in mission mode and have made it to roughly the 5th mission you'll more than likely be required to perform an air combo. With a few exceptions most characters will be able to perform a very basic (but cool!) air combo by hitting  - L, M, H, S, jump, M, M, H, S - This is a great little combo and can be extended and modified with relative ease further down the line so learn it well and it will become second nature!

Combos advanced! - Once you have mastered the above you may want to switch out the final S and replace it with Left or Right + S - This will switch your character out mid combo and allow you to continue hitting with one of your partners! You can even switch out to the third and add a super move onto the end of it for some pretty hefty damage!

There's a lot more to learn but the above should have enough of the basics to get you started :smileyhappy:

One last thing, you'll notice that your character has a partial red energy bar after taking damage, if you switch this character out they will slowly recover their health until the end of the red bar is reached. But if you switch in a character that has a partial red bar they will lose all of it so be careful!

Have fun!

Want to see a bit more of the intro? Don't press anything when on the title screen, watch the CPU vs CPU match and you will be treated to an additional hidden intro, keep watching and you will get another 2 :smileywink:

Nice guide Bunster.

For the air combo's you can also do down and S or up and S for a switch out, one juggles them up further and the other does a ground bounce, need to see if there's any extra effects to these.

Re: Marvel vs Capcom 3 - Quick Start Guide

There's a simple control scheme for those who are starting off. Otherwise the normal combos are pretty easy to pull off after some practice. The first few combos for each character in mission mode do help to learn some tricks as well but its best to remember that this game is more about fun than the likes of (Super)Street Fighter IV.

Had a quick play with down and up in training mode after you mentioned it, can't find anything useful for it as of yet but I reckon theres definately gonna be some characters where it will be the best direction to press to follow up with certain attacks...

I think the combo's are easier to do than Street Fighter, as with any fighting game I feel it's best to play with people of a similar skill but this one has so many options open to new players that it is very easy to pull off some flashy stuff (including the simple control scheme mentioned by Bambaroo above)

So far the level of skill I have fought against has been the most mixed I have ever come across, from very basic players, to highly skilled BBQSAUCE gods! But again, this is best played among friends or similar skilled people :smileyhappy:

Even if there aren't notable effects it's best to vary them anyway, since the person who's being attacked can get themselves out of the combo by matching which direction + x the attacker has pressed for the switch.
