SSF4 noobs can add me.
Ironically, I grew up playing SF2 Championship Edition in the arcades a rocked hard enough to complete everytime with 20p with most characters, so I should be at least decent at this. But I'm not. I'm rubbish. I can barely pull of the special moves, the supers elude me entirely and I have won one game in about 30.
It familiar enough that I know how to play it in theory, be its different enough and I'm rusty enough that I feel like i'm learning from scratch
ssf4 is nothing like sf2 on the snes, the simplistic nature of 2 will be a lot different compared to ssf4 because the added feature of ultras and super combos (a feature since added to the street fighter series since alpha) it's like comeing from 2d to complete 3d.
ScootaKuH wrote:This is very true. I'm not the best player in the world by any stretch of the imagination but going from standard controller to the arcade stick (I have the offical SF4 fightstick which I got along with the original SF4 last year. I now have got rid of SF4 in favour of the Super variant) and I went from being average to shockingly bad. I now consider myself average again lol.
On the other hand even though the learning to use an arcade stick takes a lot of time and effort it does make the game feel much more authentic after using one for a few sessions there really is no going back. I also found pulling off some of the more complex moves a bit easier with the stick. Just be prepared to take some serious hammerings while you get accustomed to it.
If anyone fancies a few training sessions to help imrove do add. We could even start a winner stays on or team battle if we get enough involved
i am struggling too with the arcade stick, i find it hard to do certain characters ultras or super combos with the arcade stick, yet i can do them perfectly fine with the d pad, i will just have to get used to it, it;s essential to learn how to use a arcade stick for the trials or you will never complete it,.... ever! hell, it's essential to learn how to use it online or you will get your self kicked well bad.

Dpad to stick is sooo true, back in the day I used to play Sf2 on the SNES and playing it in the arcade was extremely difficult. Been meaning to get a stick for ages now but keep putting it off lol
what type of stick do you want? i was lucky to get a tekken 6 HORI fight stick for £40 from cex, it's worth £150+ on ebay, no joke, a real bargain

I bought a few sticks from amazon.
I bought a cheap one for about 30quid - i think its a Hori something or other. Its not too bad, well worth the money.
I recently replaced it though with the official SF4 one from last year for about 90quid. This is lovely, and the same as the new SSF4 one that has come out this year, just out of date so cheaper.
I definately think the 30quid one was a good purchase. That doesnt seem like a lot of money for a half decent stick. The game was 25, so 30 for a cheap stick is 55, which isnt bad for proper good game and stick.
Obviously if have the money the official ones are special, but that a reasonable amount of money.

I might go to the shops today and get a stick so I don't start getting used to the controller too much. I still struggle to pull off ultras and even decent specials so just need to practice. Although it is quality when I finally do it and take someone out of the air with AdonDefinately want to get better at this.
If you can pick this one up cheap (here) then I highly recommend it. It is expensive, but it is of superb quality (I've had one myself since Tekken 6 and after hundreds of hours bashing the buttons like a baby with drum sticks it is still in perfect condition and while I wouldn't attempt it it is supposedly easy to mod if you wish to change the square grid with a circular one) and I highly recommend it. One thing worth noting is that it is wired but the wire is long enough to not be a nuisance (it's probably about three or four times the length of the USB wire you use to charge the PS3 controller but that's just a guess).

To the op.
Well I spent about 4-5 hours learning Cody from scratch last night and finished with about 4 wins from about 30 online lol. This game is brutal online and to be honest unless you are willing to put in a massive amount of time the plat will be out of your reach, if thats your thing.
It is very satisfying when you beat someone though and if you are looking to learn the characters starting with ken and ryu are good basic fighters. With regards to the shoryuken problem, try cody as he has a criminal uppercut which is basically a shoryuken but he doesnt come off the ground and it does hit from qhite a distance, only problem is his ultra and super are bloody glitched grrrrrrrrr. The amount of times the first sequence hits when a player is in the air only for the rest to miss is very annoying.
Overall i think this can be a good pick up and play game for a quick bash at arcade or battering your mates while talking trash. On the flip side this is a very good game for depth ie learning every character, completing their challenges and working your way up onlne. If you happen to have a particularly good win online you can also immortalise yourself by uploading the replay for all to drool at.
Oh and yea at about 20-22 quid for a full new release title you cant go wrong.

this arcade stick is good, i was going to get it myself, it has turbo function, programable buttons so you can do a ultra in 1 button press lol but i went with the tekken 6 one as it was only £40 and it was a quality pad compared to the amazon one, one comment that put me off was the fact that after using that one from amazon for long peroids the buttons stoped working, so thats why i got the tekken 6 one instead.

lol, i wouldn't call £130 cheap, the offcial street fighter 4 pads are in the £150 £200 range, not even i can afford one even though i wish i had one, i have to go for the cheaper options instead lol

I'm starting to get beaten less badly lol. Still only won a few games. Things are starting to make more sense now but my biggest problem is still pulling off moves consistently. And that focus attack dash cancel thing
Yeah, I seen that stick snake. I was probably just going to go for the white one since I'm not hardcore into fighting games to justify that expense. GAME and Gamestation have that tournament one for £65, the white one for £20 but out of stock so I'm not sure if they'll come back. Most places have the white one for £60 so it'd be good if GAME kept that price. Might go to a shop and have a look today anyway.
Well, in the short term it is very expensive (especially if you'll only occasionally buy fighting games) but it will undoubtedly last you for years which may make you to save money eventually if you buy a cheaper one of less quality that breaks often and requires replacements. But if GAME are chargin the same price for the TE as most places are for the Special Edition one then I'd highly consider the Tournament Edition one (it is the same ones that are used in Street Fighter arcade cabinets) but, be warned as some of the early models were known to have a connection issue which meant that some buttons wouldn't work out of the box but it is rare now.
@Huy, Woops lol. I didn't mean it like that
. The link was simply to show the arcade stick I was referring to (as there is the Tournament Edition, that one, and the Special Edition one, the white one). I meant it so that if you could find the Tournament Edition cheaper than/almost as cheap as the white one then definitely go for the tournament edition one. the only downside to the stick in my opinion is that it has a square based grid for the stick (I prefer it but I know alot of people don't) but you can buy a circular grid cheap and replace it easily if you wish.
