According to the latest information from Kotaku the much anticipated game Final Fantasy Versus XIII is dead some sources says it's been officially cancelled while others says some parts of it will be used for an upcoming Final Fantasy XV game.
When Kotaku asked Square Enix about this information they responded:
"We have no information on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but will be sure to update you as it becomes available."
I really hope it's not true that the games has been cancelled.

I hope it's not true but I fear it could be. Absolutely dumb move if it is true, it was possibly Square-Enix last chance to make a great game. They have completely lost the plot with FF13. Everytime they try to defend themselves they only show themselves more lost, saying that development times to make their older style RPGs with contemporary graphics would be too long to be viable. Well there's the fact, don't go for cutting edge graphics! But they see it the other way, make it look good but not satisfy with gameplay.
They're being overtaken by a lot of other RPGs. Final Fantasy isn't the benchmark it used to be.
Try White Knight Chronicles if you want a more traditional FF type game. Ni No Kuni looks similar too. Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Dragon's Dogma are also all brilliant RPG's from Japan so it's not like Japan made RPGs aren't in the modern market.

It seems (as I hoped) that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is still alive, at least Square Enix boss Yochi Wada says that the rumor spread by Kotaku saying FF Versus XIII is dead, is a hoax.
IGN translation of Wadas Twitter
"There's someone making a false rumor that Versus was cancelled," he said. "Haha... Just a minute ago, the regular Versus meeting ended. If you saw the presentation of the city, it'd knock you off your feet - LOL."
It is not unseen that companies spread certain rumors to see the fan and consumer reactions.

The games still alive but if SE keeps people waiting for much longer the new generation will start and a lot of people will have moved on. Seriously the likes of FF13-2 and FF13-3 should not have started development until FFV13 was finished. Lol I bought a PS3 on launch day off the back of FFV13 and FF13. That just shows how long the wait has been, I'm starting to not care about the game now.

I think FFXIII-2 came into being because they had so much left over from FFXIII. Maybe it was easier and faster to use that for a new game rather than whatever they currently had for Versus?
AS for FFXIII-3...I have no idea. Still interested in it though.
But yeah, give us some Versus love please SE.

No doubt it was also cheaper, XIII-2 borrowed most of the monsters and many characters from XIII, and some say Square Enix do have financial problems so that might have influenced their decision.
