How to get into Final Fantasy?

I'd really like to get into FF, but how?
I know nothing of the story, and have a PS3 and PS2.
So, would I be correct to get the games in this order?:
FFVI
FFVII
FFVIII
FFIX
FFX
FFXI
FFXII
FFXIII

Thing is...I don't want to go anywhere near that PS2 of mine . I honestly don't like the controller, it's too stiff and I forget how annoying that wire is .

Or is there a website that has a collection of all the cut-scenes etc in one, so then I can just catch up to the story?
Any ideas or anything as to how I can jump onto the FF bandwagon will be greatly appreciated.

Re: How to get into Final Fantasy?

Ok... first of all, the FF games arent related to oneanother at all, so you won't be gaining much at all by playing older games before attempting FFXIII.

Secondly... you'd need about two spare years of your life to attempt what you've just listed..

Haha okay then. That's good to hear.

So they are completely unrelated at all?

Why is that then?

Re: How to get into Final Fantasy?

I guess its to keep the games "fresh". I doubt many games would get to this many sequels and still be massively popular. They all have a similar theme tho but every story is different. Although Final Fantasy X and X-2 were related tho others are all different. That's not a bad thing tho they are great games and would definitely recommend them if you like RPG's.

As far as I know its basically set in the same world as Final Fantasy XIII but is an unrelated story.; We might however see a character or two from XIII, you never know. Details are pretty scarce at the moment but there this video

You can either;

-rent FF13 when it comes out

-buy FF7 or FF8 (when it comes out) from playstation store and play it on your PS3. It won't be the same as when it FIRST originally came out for you, but will give you an idea of the game.

Another member suggested 2yrs of gameplay, to be honest id say 5yrs to complete ALL those games 100%! Thats if you find some of the side-missions, jobs and mini-games addictive like I did. Took me a year and half to fully complete FFX. (suggesting your like me and don't play games 24/7, just when your off from work) Although each FF just to play the storyline on it's own is about 30hrs of gameplay.

-In my opinion, rent FF13 when it's out or buy it and return it back that day or trade it in.

The Final Fantasy's aren't related to each other, 'Final Fantasy' is a game franchise by Square-Enix.

Re: How to get into Final Fantasy?

If your an RPG fan you will love any of the final fantasies, Final Fantasy VII was the pinacle of the FF series, no other final fantasy has come close except maybe FFVI.

FFVIII is also very good and you can download that from the Store, that has a pretty good story to it also..

Really tho by the sound of it you wont really appreciate any of them because graphically they aint up to todays standards of graphics..   I have noticed that the older Final Fantasies tend to be more of a "You had to be there" kind of thing because at the time they were groundbreaking.

I think this is why we will get Final Fantasy VII on the PS3 at some point (the PS3 Remake), the game was almost perfec so if they do anything other than update the sound and graphics they will upset a lot of people..   Still thats Squares Pet project and is very low priority on thier release list so its likely to be years before they get the team back together to finish it..

If you start on FFXIII you will be fine, maybe play VIII from the store but you will have final fantasy Versus within the next year also will have final fantasy XIV online  this year and a host of other epic RPGs so..

Remember tho that the average gamer will get 80-100 hours play out of each final fantasy..

We see a lot of that now with PS1 classics being released as download.... which a lot of younger gamers will have missed.

But tbh we do get reconditioned to the changes and advancements in gaming over time, and its not just the visuals. The only classic I have finished on the PSP is Silent Hill. To be fair here, PS1 Classic controls work better on the PS3 than on the PSP, but compared to their newer offspring Driver, Syphon Filter and MGS are all clunkier to play than the new updates. And if I'm to be honest, I would say that FFVII feels the same compared to FFX, FFX-2 or FF12.

Gaming nostelgia is just that... at the time they were groundbreaking, now they are not. And I was there. I was also there when we used to put 20c pieces into arcade machines so that pacman could eat his dots.

One of my big regrets as an adult is that as a child when we bought new systems my parent sold off the old ones... The nostelgia in me longs to play my old Commodore 64 games... The reality is though, if I had my PS3 side by side with my C-64 permanently I'd spend 95% of my time on the PS3, and only touch the old computer for a nostelgia laugh every now and again.

On topic... (another little rant for the morning :smileytongue: ) ... if you want something close to the feel of FFXIII, then IMO you'd have to try FFX, FFX-2 and FF12... they will be the closest you can get to the game in terms of narrative, in game visuals, FMV cutscenes, and combat.

Re: How to get into Final Fantasy?

Well, I just didn't want to miss any of the story line, but since it's a different game, I don't have to worry about it then.
I'll try out FFVII AND VIII.
But, I've got my eyes set on XIII.
So, just to make sure, I won't be confused or what the hell is going on!? during the game will I? :smileytongue:
