Work on the new title in the Final Fantasy XIII series that will be announced in September has apparently only recently started.

In this week's Famitsu (via Andriasang), producer Yoshinori Kitase said that the new project only recently entered production and that we'd find out the game's title on September 1.

While it's not much, the news that the game hasn't been worked on for long lends credence to the idea that we could be about to see Final Fantasy XIII-3. When it was first revealed that new series details were incoming, many fans were hoping they may in some way relate to the long-absent Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but unless you count 2006 as "recent", it appears we can now rule this out.

The Final Fantasy 25th anniversary event in Shibuya kicks off later this month, with the new game scheduled to be revealed at 11.30 on September 1 through the "Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Saga: New Developments Presentation".

The more times things like this come along the more Versus seems to slip into the prospect of being nothing but Vaporware. Not that I am entirely uninterested in what this announcement is but I am getting sick of the whole spin off / part 2 thing they are doing (pity I can't seem to stop buying them though).

I was only interested in Versus and really didn't care for XIII. Shame that it's been forgotten about to make way for more sequels to a game I feel, really doesn't deserve them.

Why is that people have been harping on about Versus so much the last few years??... all we have seen is a pre-rendered trailer, with some character designs and a futuristic setting... It's hardly the selling point of the century to say that this will be the best FF since VII....

I'm quite pleased with this as I really enjoyed the last two games. I do hope the third game focuses more on Lightning though and makes her a proper playable character.

And I hope this time DLC wise they wont be so stingy. I still think the Episode with Shaz and Lighting should have been part of the game.

I was interested in it because a lot of the people who worked on Kingdom Hearts were supposed to be on the team for it. I was mainly excited about the composer...

As for being the best since VII, I don't count VII among my favourites (haters gonna hate) so I wouldn't know about that fuss.

But I do often wonder... if/when (if when is possible) this Versus hype ever goes the stupid away, will people start a hype over Agni's Philosophy and start expecting and/or wanting Square to make it an actual game?

I wouldn't mind to be honest. It kinda looked cool, could be a cool story to it. But I most certainly won't get excited about it like these Versus lot.
