There's only 1 current gen FF out on PS3 which is XIII - although at this point I'd say hold off until XIII-2 and pick that up, there's many improvements and changes to the game, which will hopefully result in a better experience.
The game, I believe, has a beginners primer, so you should be able to catch up on the story of XIII. XIII is extremely long too (40-50 hours), so you may not even be able to get through it all in the week until XIII-2's release.
There's more coming out, these are what to watch out for:
PlayStation 3: XIII-2, Versus XIII, XIV, X-HD
PSP: Type-0 English
Vita: X-HD
I highly presume Squeenix are working on XV for obvious reasons too.

I can't see why you wouldn't want to pick up XIII for £15 or less. When your done XIII-2 will be cheaper.
Regardless of what many say about XIII you get an incredible game for just £15. Additionally if you fall into the hate it catagory you then haven't spent £30 on the sequel. It's meant to be different yes, but not unrecognisable from it's predecessor.

I'm the opposite, I defend XIII from the hordes of crybabies, alot ![]()
If he doesn't mind release dates and what not - then yeah, grab XIII and pick up XIII-2 when done with it.

Amazon have XIII for the princely sum of £12.99 which is an absolute bargain. There is also a strong chance that the price will go up and it may become harder to comeby after next week.
I'd highly recommend playing the original before the new one, firstly as others have said it will give you a strong idea as to if you will enjoy XIII-2. Also no amount of catch up or story so far material in XIII-2 will make up for playing the whole of the original. It would be like trying to understand what was going on in X-2 without having played X.
