The chapter 9 boss is killing me. I was fighting it for 20 minutes and then it cast doom on Lightning and the MF won with like 2 health left. Then on my second attempt, he killed Lightning at max health with one friggin move! how cheap is that?
Could use some pointers on this boss, current party im attempting it with is Lightning, Vanille, Snow.

I fought this and won on the first go.
Its not that hard, just a very long fight.
Barthandelus:
As with the Havoc Skytank encountered earlier, you musst destroy this colossal oppoent's armor to reduce its overwall strengh and the frequency of its attacks.
Star by using Bully to bestow protective buffs.
Diversity is the safest Paradigm to choose thereafter, but you can briedly transfer to Relentless Assault to accelerate Chain Gauge groth when all party members are helathy though this is a risk that you technically need not take.
Each Pauldron and Ailette has its own elemental weakneess.
To speed 6thing up, use a librascope or manually target the correct weakness with the abilites option.
Once all Pauldrons and ailettes have been destroyed. Barthandelus will loss its famage resistance and blanket immunity to status ailments.
Paradigm shift to bully straight away to strengthen party members with shell, protect and veil and inflict a couple of debuffs.
You can then use the paragigm pairing of relentless assault and diversity to stagger your opponent and begin to deal significant damage.
The basic attacks employed by Barthandelus are strong enought, but its destrudo ability - introduced after your opponent has been starggered once - has the power to wipe out all party members in one fell swoop,
Its also completely resets the chain gauge, even if your foe is staggered.
This vicious assault is foreshadowed by a very long and distrintive "Power Up" period.
It is absolutely vital that you ensure every party member is at full health before the attack is unleased aapproximately 25 secounds later.
This is where the heros charge paradigm proves invaluable.
Change to it straight away once the attack notification caption appears, and Hope will refresh vital status enhancements while you manually heal with Lightning.
Before the attack hits home, change to the solidarity paradigm.
This will reduce the total damage sustatined, and should see Hope heal Lightning in her moment of greatest need.
You can then paradigm shift back to diversity to have Hope continue healing while Lighting and Fang grind away at your resilent adversary.
Should thing look grim, you always have the option of summoning Odin to factiliate a last-gasp escpae from death.
Near the very end of the battle, Barthandelus may cast the incurable Doom status ailment on your party leader.
Don't be too alarmed: the dealine acutally offers plenty of time to finish him off.
A note to add to this.
I was able to beat it with out calling on Odin.
The fight is long, its just a matter of keeping your party alive and go on the offensive.

Start off with a Librascope so your allies will choose the correct spells for each segment, then use a synergist to buff the party. Alternate between Diversity and Relentless Assault until all the Armour segments are destroyed then bring out the MED/SYN/SAB paradigm Even Odds to rebuff and weaken your opponent.
Keep hammering away with Diversity/Relentless Assault and make sure you keep your HP up and you should have no trouble so long as you've been building up the Crystarium properly.

Been trying to kill this ***** for 2 hours now! I've tried everything on here and on FF wiki, all different paradigms and strategies and he still wipes the floor with me when he uses destudo.
Think I will give it a rest for a few hours, not doing my health any good, hopefully later on I can take him down.

You can survive Destrudo with enough hp...i bought those bangles from the shop just before the boss to give me just enough hp to survive it...i used haste at the start of the battle and made sure i dispelled haste when he used it (those left and right parts cast haste on themselves and bombard you with spells until you die) use librascope at start of battle to scan every part so your team know what its weaknesses are and they will use the right skills...try stagger em asap and take em down..need to be quick as he uses doom when he has so much hp left

just beat this guy now on my 5th atempt, took almost 20mins to kill him and i got a 0 star rating but i dont care hes finally dead! ![]()
the main problem is when he casts destructo. when he starts charging destucto up change to the paradigm COM/MED/MED , do this until your party is fully healed, then change to a paradigm that has COM/SYN/SEN, you should just survive the destructo then heal your party again, then change to RAV/RAV/RAV to charge his stagger quickly before he casts destruto again
edit: btw i used, lightning, snow and hope

This was pretty much my method, except I found that sabateur wasnt particulary helpful once the bulk of the parts were destroyed. When he begins to charge you have about 30-50 seconds? To heal up so do so. Keep in mind that healing isnt of great importance while hes not doing his big move so keep your hp aroud mid range so you can get more attacks in.

According to FF wiki, when he's charging up for destrudo and if you are at full health if you hit him with rav/rav/rav quickly then change back, his stagger bar only needs to go halfway to stagger him. Also his next destrudo won't be as powerful.
