I just played my first ff game, (ffv) because it was free, and while the first hour is fun, i hate how every 10 feet there is a random encounter, espically when your trying to search for things or look were to go. I wanted to see if anybody had an opnion on which is the best game to start with, whether its an older one or one of the newer ones.

Sorry I was trying to say which is the best one ever or anything. I just hated that every 3 secs was a fight. but i know people didn't like ff13 because it was linear. Im not the person that really cares about all the hype of a ff game. Ill probably think they all are good.

The oldies, FFI to FFVI, are pretty much like that. It can really get insane! I specially hate when I'm lost and, like you've said, you're trying to find out something and you get a RE.
Just breathe deep and think they're really what you need to level up -- that can make you stay calm. xD Don't run away, you'll be needing the EXP.
So you can start playing the most epic one ever: Final Fantasy VII. You still have random encounters but not every 2 seconds.
Good luck!

It's a tough one to give advice about. Everyone favours 1 over the rest for many varying reasons.
As Mark says if you'd rather play the game without the random battles then stick to the newest ones but if you don't care about graphics (which I guess you don't having bought FFV) and would like to invest in a brilliant story I'd definitely start at FFVII (the daddy in my opinion) or even FFVIII or FFIX.
FFXII is a cracker as it's a radical change from FFX with it's gambits etc. but is a real great game once you get used to the style.
I love all of them in their own way and even just talking about them is making me want to fire up some of the older ones again....
Cheers.

From personal experience I have found that random encounters is one of the favoured battle systems in JRPG's.
In the last few years the Final Fantasy series in particular has made efforts to get away from this but I'm afraid if you want to play the earlier games, pre FF12, your going to have to suffer it.
The best way of coping is to get yourself into the mindset that every battle makes you stronger. If you didn't explore & get lost lots resulting in many RE's I think you will find that the boss battles will be too hard, undefeatable even.
