Looking into this today GROOVE. In the meantime, check out the EA Sports Community - there's been some interesting discussion happening over there about these problems:

Please note, they do suggest that reducing your friends list to below 20 may fix these problems but from what I've heard from other users, this wont work. I'll try to find out how close they are to fixing it today but I cant promise anything!
