While we had an unexpected issue with server access recently, I decided to put my down-time to good use.
I experimented with how playing offline (without access to the GT servers) works when later re-establishing connection for an online save, and also maintaining the progress you have made while offline.
My test evolved around the new GT League.
A Campaign Mode I had yet to take part in.
So here's how I went about ensuring what i did offline was carried over to my online save.
First, and most importantly, I had to set-up my PS4 so it did as I wanted it to.
You will need to access one of the XMB menus and turn on an important function.
So on the XMB, go to "Settings > Power Saving Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode".
Here you will find this screen.
You will need to tick the "Keep Application Suspended" option.
Once you are done there, that's it.
Play the game in an offline mode.
Be that GT League, Arcade, Liveries, etc.
I chose to race in some of the early GT League Beginners races.
The key from this point forward is to not close the GT Sport App.
Simply put your PS4 straight into Rest Mode when you have finished playing.
When you decide you want to play again, switching on the PS4 means GT Sport is still active.
"Start" the game and you should be exactly where you left it.
Use the "Reconnect" button ingame to gain access to the GT servers.
Once connected you will receive 2 messages.
The last of which will be "Save data has been saved to the server".
All Credits, Experience, etc you earned offline will now be on your online save and you are good to go.
This is all great, except it has been down 15 hours for me! This means I cannot close GTS until the servers are back in operation, what if it takes days or weeks? GTS has now hijacked my PS4 and I am unable to play anything else, or hope that the servers come back online, or rather operational, will not cost me the millions I have made while waiting! Who is to say what the issue is as no one has even come forward to tell us what the problem is? You are assuming that the save will sync, but it’s not a guarantee, and now I am forced to stare at a disconnected GTS, or lose millions in progress!
Yeh, I feel your pain.
All I can tell you is I did this myself.
And it worked.
It isn't without any catches though.
But it's ideal for situations like this.
Obviously, once you have finished playing GT offline, that's it for using the console.
It's Rest Mode or lose your progress.
Once you play another game, Blu-ray, etc, it closes the GT App.
So there is a decision you need to make.
That's not to say what I describe doesn't work, because it does.
But you need to be in that specific situation where you can't get onto the GT servers, but you wish to play GT, but you are happy to wait until you get access to the servers to save that progress, even if that means waiting until the next day.
All I'm putting forward is the solution.
The situation where you actually need to put this into practice will hopefully be quite rare.
Two days you mean servers are back online for you?@ChannonJ
For those who just completed something and then find the servers are down, thats crap and risk of losing progress makes it lousy. Then there are those who are losing more than just the progress from when the servers go down, horror stories about loss of cars they already had etc. But when first loading up? If the server is offline and I cant connect, gt gets closed and I play something else. I am not wasting time on it to find nothing done is saved, its not worth the risk. Dont get me wrong, I keep trying to get back on, after all, if the server is struggling it seems only fair that I and everybody else thats offline should try and connect again asap in the pseudo ddos attack that a struggling server creates for itself. Gts has a major over reliance on being connected to servers.
Sorry but slaving the console because the server is not available is not a valid solution. I have this rare day available to play and server is down... ALL day long. If they cannot assure availability, should have a way to save progress locally and Sync with server. Why did i buy a game i cannot play when i want? Will not give further money to the franchise If situation persist.
Thanks for the advice :-)
if had an offline mode to save the progresse nothing this had happened make an save offline this worst gran turismo what came out even the gt concept for ps2 is better
I agree. I adore GT, but this one has really annoyed me. In many ways it feels like they don't want us to play it - long wait for online games, very few races to choose from, very few cars, very few tracks, no offline save. Visuals and actual racing are fantastic, but so many barriers to just racing. Why, PD?@TiagoSGM
Your solution doesn't work for the newest server problems.
I played a lot offline yesterday and today I can't reconnect to save my progress.
Yes, I understand that.
Obviously, to transfer your progress to the online servers you need to connect to the online servers.
But I managed it yesterday, at the height of all the dramas, so it can be done, and it does work.
Since Christmas eve I have not switched off or changed game becaurse of Gran Turismo sport, so have been many hours doing the career mode and track progress waiting for it to be sorted out. Went up two levels earned over a million credits thirteen cup victorys and golds in track mastering. then it crashed, loosing everyting. We dont all want to be a slave to your servers Gran Turismo. Great move spoiling your customers christmas.
Remember, too, that you can't lose power or else you may lose even more than just your progress.
Use a properly sized Uninterruptable Power Supply with any device with a hard drive or SSD in it. (Laptops have their own battery.)
***** All this because PD can't do local saves, and can't keep their servers up?
It is not for us to work around the problems, it is for PD to fix them. If the product they sold us doesn't work...
They have really, truly messed GT up. There was no need at all for all this.@MastrGT
GT has yet to have a perfect protection system for game progress files. We do what we must to do our own protection. Have you made a back-to-back copy yet?
Also, using a UPS works for all devices with hard drives regardless of GT. I have had all consoles since the PS2 protected by them. We do what we must to protect our equipment.@ChannonJ
Is someone or a group actually working in this problem, or are they on Christmas vacation like everyone else?
Thanks for the advice, but to need this in the 21st century is a joke. No offence to you. That's for game developers being numb. Pretty much locking down a game because there isn't an internet connection is ridiculous.
C'mon, really, you must all realise how ridiculous it really is? Really! Which was the last console you couldn't save on?
We are going backwards.
The last 2 days have been rather extenuating circumstances.
And also situations that PD have investigated and said they will work with the PlayStation Network to avoid it happening again in the future.
Beyond this particular circumstance, what I have said in the opening post is correct.
Frankly, it's disappointing that this Tips and Guide thread has turned into a complaint thread.
