Movies That Actually Need To Be Remade

I was browsing through a site called Mental Floss that I read on a regular basis and I spotted an article about movies that need to be remade. It offered up 4 questions in regards to this and I thought that it would be interesting to see what the OPC thought of it.

The questions were:

The general premise behind a movie remake or reboot is that if something was popular once, it should be popular again. Or, as Nick Offerman’s character puts it in 21 Jump Street, “The guys in charge of this stuff lack creativity and are completely out of ideas. So all they do now is recycle sh*t from the past and expect us all not to notice.”

But let’s look at this another way.

1. What are some movies that could have been really good if not for a casting mistake, a weird plot turn, or some other regrettable decision? What movies NEED to be remade, because they could have been so much better?

2. If you had the power to dictate such things, and if un-remake-able were a word, what’s one film you would declare un-remake-able?

3. Everyone has books they reread from time to time, but what single book do you most-wish you could read again for the first time?

4. If you could have lived with any TV family growing up, which would you choose?

As a side note, if you're going to elaborate on what they should be remade due to plot choices, please remember to use the spoiler  function. :smileyhappy:

Re: Movies That Actually Need To Be Remade

Remakes is just a lazy way of making easy money from a maistream audeince, the producers don't have to do much research because they know there is already a audience. The biggest problem I have is Hollywood remaking films from different parts of the world like Asia & Europe, shows how gready and disrepectful Hollywood is nowadays.

Oldboy a film with a great storyline and such a perfect film getting remade as a Hollywood movie, its just not going to be the same, Troll Hunter, Battle Royale and many other great movies getting pointless remakes, just enjoy the originals. I saw the Dragon Tattoo remake the other week, it just made me mad, I don't want to see something i've seen before.

as for the last 2 questions, I dont read a whole lot and as for TV family I would say the Marshs on South Park because I would love to go drinking with Randy, none of clean cut family nonsense drive me mental. well that was ramble

Why would you "remake" a film? It's not the same film then is it, it's practically just a copy :smileyindifferent:

'Remade' films in my opinion are never as good as the originals and never should be made.

Easy, get an actual scriptwriter in and remake the Star Wars prequels. Perhaps judged overharshly, especially by die hard fans, but they should, and could, have been so much better.

2. If you had the power to dictate such things, and if un-remake-able were a word, what’s one film you would declare un-remake-able?

Just one? As I've been in an 80s nostalgia mood, I'll say Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

3. Everyone has books they reread from time to time, but what single book do you most-wish you could read again for the first time?

Ender's Game, although Necroscope would be a very close second.

I read recently there's talk of a modern re-take of Scarface for the love of god NOOOOoooo!

I can just imagine it gangster rap cast with the likes of 50 cent etc it makes me cry thinking about it.

Although, unless talking about the original, Scarface is actually a remake itself.

I've heard the new one is not so much a remake of either of the previous films, but mixing elements from both, whatever that might mean.

At least they haven't used the term 'reimagining' which usually results in missing the point of the original source material entirely and replacing it with their 'new plot ideas' instead, the end result being that of around 90% + of the recent glut of horror remakes.

Re: Movies That Actually Need To Be Remade

As far as I know Martin Scorsese only has one oscar and it was for a remake, The departed, which is a remake of Infernal affairs an asain film.

Now Scorsese deserves an oscar, and I know people like the departed, but its just a remake, it added nothing, not one single thing of worth to the original and he got an oscar for it.

As for a film that could be remade. Accident. Its a japanese film about hitmen who carry out sophisticated hits making them look like accidents. I thought it was a very good film, but I thought there was a lot of room for expansion of the concept, and a slicker fast paced hollywood film could be amazing.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1202514/

Another Asian one that could be remade would be Mad Detective. Again, i really like this film, its about a detective everyone thinks is mad, but he can see what youre thinking and isnt mad, either that or he is totally mad.. But I loved the whole concept of it, and thought there was bags of room for expansion of the concept, even into a multi part film with a more complicated plot.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0969269/

A horror that could work with a little adaption is R-Point, its about an army team that stumbles on haunted land with ghosts etc. I havent seen a good horror out of America in a while, but I think this could lend itself to an american version really well. They have the afghan conflict to play off and i thought the idea behind it was really good, I like R-Point, but there is scope to make a better film

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417072/

But all of them films could be totally ruined too. For all the scope I see of improving them, I see equal if not more scope for ruining them.
