What's happened to 18 films?

Nowadays the highest certificate I've seen is 15. Even the new Total Recall is only a 12A.

I imagine in the future there will be a film where the villain says "I'm gonna rip your *****ing head off and ***** down your neck" and then later on he will do exactly that and the film will get a U rating.

Even the Alien films if they were made now would probably be passed as 12

It's a sign of the times. I think mostly it's to do with money. Easier to sell a movie rated 12A or 15. Also over the years, I think we've more tolerance towards violence in movies now.

TV wise, the Walking Dead is rated 18. But I really can't remember any movies that were rated 18 or R rated in the last few years. But if you compare  'The Grey' which is rated 15 in the UK & most of Europe, it's R rate in America.

UK isn't as harsh, even though they did edit the dvd release of the Walking Dead :smileysad: Which aired uncut on TV here.

Re: What's happened to 18 films?

I think the old BFBC ratings were more a hark back to the Draconian reaction to the video nasties of the 80s. Anything with a hint of blood or more than the odd obscenity was seemingly slapped with an 18 certificate.
It does seem strange though, after growing up as a horror genre fan where practically everything was rated 18, to see films with more blood, violence and bad language barely being given a 15 rating now.

my husband buys quite a few rated 18 films, you won't find many at Blockbuster but loads released on DVD

but here are 2 coming to cinemas in 2012 - not recommending them or any thing just shows they are still being released

Anyway, the last 18 film I watched was Panic Button which was released last year.

I remember "watching" jaws the 1st time (think it was rated 15) scared me something silly. Now it's almost counted as a documentary and not something scary.

Yeah similar to what eg's just said. Im sure I remember the first couple of Childs Play & Critters films were strictly 18's when they were new on vhs, yet now they they would be considered some sort of spoof comedy nowadays.
Or maybe I was a scaredy-cat & just thought they were 18s back then..?

Edit:
Exorcist is another one that doesn't pack anywhere near the punch today, compared to the horrified people watching it in the cinema in the 70s
