A few questions about Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Hello,

I built my self a cheap PC for my bedroom about 4 months ago. At the time I was on a budget and wanted to keep cost down. The last thing I needed was Windows. After searching around a bit a mate of mine was telling me about a website he bought his Windows 7 key from. He said if you have a genuine Windows 7 disc you can simply buy a key.

After reading about this site there was a few good reviews about it and hardly anything bad about them. So I took the reviews and my friends advice and bought a key (only £16). They emailed me the key and I installed Windows. It passed the windows genuine test and I was happy.

A month later my friend called me telling me he got a message on his pc saying he was a victim of fraud. He windows was not genuine. He bought it form the site I bought the key. So ever since then I have been waiting for the dreaded message my self.  Nearly 4 months later that message appeared.

Luckily another friend of mine just recently upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7. He bought this Windows Vista from Currys when it came out a few years back so I shouldn't worry about this being fake. Now here is a problem I think I know how to fix but I just need some confirmation. As I mentioned before when I was building this PC I wanted to keep it as cheap as possible. So I bought a IDE Sony DVD ROM (now a writer) drive. Since this is a IDE drive am guessing it is a few years old. If I remember correctly you need a fairly new (or at least a dvd drive made in last few years) to be able to install Vista?. I have tried via the bios I select boot from CD. But it wont load the disc. It just then boots up to the fake Windows 7. I have also tried it via loading Windows 7 up. Putting disc in and see if it loads. As soon as I click setup it says this is not compatible with your system blah blah blah.

So am guessing I need a new SATA DVD drive?

Now for my Windows 7 question. I have seen on HotukDeals recently Windows 7 Professinal going cheap. This is a student offer. But you can also get the deal if you have a family member in education. Witch I do so I can get this offer. Now it is only £37 so it is not breaking the bank. My question is do I really need it? As I said I got Vista Home Premium here. But I can't remember what vista is like. Last time I used it was about 2 years ago. I remember having some compatibility issues. So should I just install Vista and use that or but Windows 7 Pro?

Last question. If I do decide to buy Windows 7 Pro. Will I be able to upgrade from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro (its the upgrade edition you see).

Thanks.

You could boot an ISO of the OS from USB and install which might take longer but it'd work.

Personally I feel Windows 7 is more efficent and less resource intensive than Vista.

In place upgrades are only available if your going from Vista Pro to Windows 7 Pro with matching system bits.

Although I'm not to sure how it would work with an illegimate OS.

What is the custom install on about? Am guessing it will completely wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install of 7?

Custom Install just means Clean Install MS was just being weird. :Shame:
