Android discussion thread.

People looking for a thread about robots turn away now.

Others join in.

First off i have a couple of questions.

Without rooting is there anyway to take screenshots?

Can you change phone contacts to google contacts without re-creating? I imported them from outlook and it makes them phone contacts which obvious don't sync with google servers.

Which apps do you recommend?

So far my most useful  apps are.

Taskiller free.

Astro filemanager

layar

orange wednesdays (for cinema 2 for 1)

speedtest

XDA-developers

Wavesecure

traintimes UK

Beebplayer

Re: Android discussion thread.

Nope, you need to root to take screenshots.

In the contacts bit go Menu > View and choose what you want to see contact wise there if that's what you mean.

Re: Android discussion thread.

How do you take screenshots? I've looked everywhere and all I can find is answers that require downloading some software and doing stuff to the phone. Photobucket

As for apps, my favourite have to be:

Advance Task Killer

Seesmic

CoPilot Live

Nimbuzz

ConnectBot

Anytime Pool

AndFTP

AndChat

AppRemover

Barcode Scanner

KeepassDroid

Linda Manager

Shazam

Toss It: Pro

Tapatalk Pro

Photobucket

Movies

ICE: In Case of Emergency

Think that's about it. :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Android discussion thread.

Why the need to root?

Is there a seperate market for rooted apps? Is there a good selection compared to the normal market?

Re: Android discussion thread.

What root gives you access to is
- uninstall some of the apps that the carrier pushes on you (like Sprint NFL and NASCAR)
- install custom ROM's (Like MoDaCo's ROM) that have updated software, different functionality, etc.
- Be able to tether your phone (so your computer can hook up to it wirelessly and use it's internet connection, effectively acting as a modem) (This can be done on iPhones but it takes rooting also and Apple is fairly active in trying to break your root access)

There's more info here on "Why Root?": http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543940
