In response to the OP the only way I found to sync the contacts to Google was to do a back up/export of all your contacts (phone, SIM etc) then delete them all from the phone. Sign in to your Google account on your computer and upload your exported contact files there. Delete any duplicates etc and you're done. Any changes you make will be reflected both ways. Just remember to add any new contacts as Google ones for them to sync.

The way i did it was sync contacts via htc sync. Delete them off the phone. Export them from outlook into csv. Import csv into gmail and then sync the phone.
Worked out pretty well.
