Ah, there was somebody on these forums who designed an app for PC that showed notifications for your PSN account.

Thought it could've been you, since you're a programmer and I can't remember names so well

That wasn't me, but I remember that someone on these forums wrote about having set up a public SOAP interface for fetching trophy information[*]. I don't know if there's a correlation between what you're thinking about and that person's work.

[*] I couldn't figure out if he had permission to set that up, or what the deal was, so I never used it. But I started working on a program for drawing trophy/time graphs using that interface.

hs_target

Would be the more normal way of calling it, a recipient would only recieve not act, a target can act and become an initiator or initiated.

While I don't fully agree with the reasoning, I do think you found a better word none the less; hs_target it is. In fact, I may even change initiator to hs_source, just to make it more symmetical.

Finally, naming I won't be annoyed with. Thanks!

We use "listeners", as they are idle until they "hear" something from the network.

I'd call yours, Mrs stinky Pinkies.

What do we call the hand that wipes the bum?

who is this we? some crazy band of idiots you hang with?

Tha amount of times you get stuff wrong I would be surprised if the "we" contained any educated or qualified people.

Things are put in pairs "Sender - Receiver/Recipient" - "Host - Target" etc.

If you use "listeners" what do you call the initiators? talkers? snarf snarf snarf.

Re: Anthropomorphically correct opposite of "Initiator"

Just a suggestion as valid as yours. What is on the other end of "targets"? Snipers? Oh, host. Sounds to me like listeners couples with "host" better than "target"... It's not unheard of for a host to give a speech. And what listens to speeches? Oh yeah - listeners.

But it's all subjective anyway. Really no need for a childish personal attack.

In a sense that's would be correct since the target system gets the handshake request via its listener socket. However, since this is a strict peer-to-peer system, I would prefer not to use traditional client/server nomenclature.

One thing I did to lessen the confusion was to break out the handshake code from the peer handler module, and moved it to its own module. That way it's obvious that whatever terms are used are used strictly for their role in the handshake, rather than their roles as peers. I think that was a major reason I got so frustrated with the naming.

Ah ok. Maybe you were on the right track with N0/N1 then?

Except I would call them AgentZero and AgentN. Or maybe Instigator/Follower...?

Or Inducer/Induced, although they may be too similar.
