Most news usually ends up here http://www.newswireni.com/ or you could use BBC NI http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/northern_ireland/ as if you've your postcode set to somewhere near here it'll give you a Foyle and West section there. You could also use the Sentinel or Journal sites but they don't usually have all that much and are essentially the same http://www.londonderrysentinel.co.uk/ and http://www.derryjournal.com/

James is from derry although I think he is in belfast now at uni. Dont quote me on that.

Correct on both counts, although I've been out of the country for the last week and heard nothing about this incident, nor can I find anything either.

Why would a place go "Hmm what should we call this place? I know, can't think of a new name so let's name it after another place and put another word on the end.....I've got it, we shall be known as Darlingtonderry!"
It's been a while since I did History but if memory serves, the London part originated from the time of the plantations. I think the Derry plantation was granted to prominent guilds from London, so when the city was founded, they named it Londonderry to acknowledge the London guilds, while using the anglicised name of the region. As far as I am aware, the official name is Londonderry but the use of London is a sore point for some people.

London Livery donations helped rebuild the city during the plantation.

Its name in the charter is Londonderry, but its normally called Derry http://www.derrycity.gov.uk/ so it in practice has two official names, and as far as I know Derry City council wanted to change it in the charter but in the end didnt.

As far as I know the BBC decided to call it Londonderry the first time they mention it in any article, and derry every other time they mention it. On Maps it can be derry, londonderry, or derry/londonderry.

I dont think anyone really cares unless they want to cause an argument.

Spot on.

Re: Anybody from Londonderry on here?

I know Helen, she lives in Belfast and her family have a farm.

One time when she was over here she got me to phone her Dad up and pretend I was from this farming magazine he had entered some kind of contest in, anyway I can't remember what it was all about now but I talked crap with him for a while and then arranged a date with him when myself and the magazines photographer could visit to get some pictures and an interview.

He and his sons spent days cleaning the farm up and making everything spot on for my arrival...............

Oh deary, it took many months before he spoke to his daughter again after that, poor bloke, I think it broke his heart, not only was he let down because this mag hadn't chosen his farm but also his daughter had played the prank on him and made him look like a fool by making him fall for it and getting the whole place cleaned up just for nothing.

From what I remember her saying, he got the funny side of it in the end and also admitted that it got the place a good going over, which it needed.

So in the end I did a good deed.
