But how can it all be piracy when some of it is not copyrighted material?
This the US remember. They dont really seem to care about legality much anymore. If its on a dot com site they figure they can do what they want even if the owners and servers are the other side of the planet. Copyrighted or not, they just see something they're not getting money from so it must be illegal.

So if I host a website on an American server which streams my *ahem* home videos, I could get in trouble? ![]()

I wouldn't worry about that Danny. You're more likely to get in trouble for filming wiminz/Mike without permission than you are for letting people stream it.

I have Mike's permission
To be fair, he was under the influence of roofies at the time, but I have recorded evidence!

Streaming is not illegal in America, Netflix? youtube?
If they take your .com domain and you can prove you had copyright to stream, you will get your .com back. Where it gets sticky is if you own media on one format, say dvd this does not give you the right to make a digital copy and stream it to yourself, that would be illegal.
As for uk, you must obey uk law when you are in the UK, if a film has no certificate it does not matter if its hosted on an american or spanish server, UK law is covering you, youre in the UK, and youre breaking the law.
You must always obey the laws of the country you are in, not the laws of the country where the server is located.
Copyright wont come into it.

Yes. If its actually on an American based server they definately try to extradite but even if its all based outside the US and is using .com as a domain name unless you can prove you have all the copyright and permissions they see it as being under US law and at the very least will seize the websites domain.
Theres sadly been far too many examples recently, and not just streaming sites either, they seized the domain of a Canadian owned and based gambling website. Not good
