Are Pitbull dangerous?

Obviously the media love reporting about dog attacks but I would like to get your thoughts. My brother has brought back one of his friends dogs and wants to keep it, but it all depends if I am willing to take it for walks etc on a Monday as I am the only one home. The dog does not bark and seems nice enough but is it unpredictable, the last thing I want is it to randomly bite a passerby while walking it. Plus I am not sure if it is even legal to own certain dogs like Pitbulls here in the UK?

Yea, his music is just awful, a real danger to my ears but I do avoid the radio to keep safe.

No Pitbulls are ilegal to own now, you will get the dog taken from you and you will be in bother.

Re: Are Pitbull dangerous?

Some dogs have a tendency to be more difficult to handle than others but really it all depends on how well you train them. A pitbull can be tame if the owner knows what they're doing. Having said that though, as people have pointed out it's illegal to own one unless you have a licence.

Report it now and the dog will probably be less likely to get put down and you may even have a chance of keeping it.

Pit Bull Terriers are illegal in the UK, as are 'PIt Bull type' dogs, to cover variations and cross-breeds. And the only way to find out if the dog is banned may well result in it being destroyed if found to be so.

Aside from the illegality I wouldn't personally consider them to be a problem, or any different to a Staffordshire Bull Terrier - but I would question what sort of person is prepared to give a dog away. And I'd only take on a dog like that (i mean to look after, not in a fight) if it was a puppy.

Re: Are Pitbull dangerous?

A lot of the time dogs are agressive because they have been trained wrong from puppy, but some breeds are distinctly agressive this is due to the make-up of their genetics.

Thanks for all the advice, I am not much of a dog fan myself and it is just hassle to me. I will show my family some of those links, I am not walking a dog if it means potentially getting a criminal record.

Re: Are Pitbull dangerous?

Yeah, think it's mainly down to the owners and the reasons they have owned that particular breed (or close to it) I,m sure the vast majority are real placid wee things that would lick you to death.
