Are emulators legal?

8 Replies 316 Views Created 16-11-2008
Now i've always thought that emulators are legal aslong as you own the actual console and game. But recently i've been researching PS1 emulators so I can play Resident evil 2 at college when I get a laptop, and i've come across a number of things saying differently and that they are illegal. So what is it? Was I right, or should I be running to my computer to get rid of evidence?

Anyway legal or not, nothings going to stop me from playing my favourite PS1 games on the go.

Re: Are emulators legal?

The Emulators themselves are legal however the Roms/ISOs are not unless you own a copy of that game, for instance if you have a legitimate copy of Resident Evil 2 on disc then it's legal, if however you obtained the game from another source and do not own the disc then it is illegal

Re: Are emulators legal?

Who cares to be honest, backdated games, backdated consoles. Technically it may be illegal but nobody cares if you download a 10 year old game.

that is all correct apart from the bit in bold.

you are not allowed to make a copy of a game at all.

doing so is illegal.
