Its not just microsoft, Apple were caught too and will have to remove push notifications, mobile me, and wifi from their products or have them banned unless they can settle.
It's likely if motorolla want, ps3 will do the same and they will go after every company as the patents are now court tested.

I don't understand the articleSomeone please explain it to me, I seem to be missing something.
Basically a video codec belongs to motorolla, people have known about patent issues with the codec for long long time, but its a good codec and motorolla didnt seem to care so people started including it for free.
Now motorolla is poor, they are going after everyone who uses it, pretty poor thing to do, but microsoft has done this to people in the past before too, let them use stuff for free then say "actually you owe us millions cause it wasnt in the small print".
Motorolla also own wifi patents that are not frand, I dunno how they managed that one but they do, and the ITC has already said they will ban apples products over it, its not one of these cases where motorolla will be told to take a fair amount of money they can ban products.
lastly, motorolla own push to client patents, thats when you get an update without going to the server and asking for the update. so like facebook updates to your phone, they get pushed to you.
All the patents are now court tested, and are going through final stages and will be set in stone, which means, if you use the video codec, wifi, or push services, you gotta pay motorolla or your product will be removed from shelves.
Basically, motorolla does not have to give use of the patents for any money other than what they decide, they do not have to give it to you cheap, they do not have to give it to you for free, they can ask you for a billion dollars and if you say no, your product is gone, banned.

It's likely a deal will be done with microsoft for some serious coin, probably a similar ammount to what microsoft has been taking away from android makers in royalties ![]()
Its likely no deal will be done with apple for some cash, Apple are simply too agressive and have turned around and sued people they have done deals with in the past. I would think if apple want to keep making those record profits which motorolla can now claim, they would have to part with some serious shares so that motorolla will be able to block any future litigation and also make coin.
I dont normally use coin as a word for money, but I think americans do. Also this is what samsung tried in europe and america, shame samsung are asian or they would have won too.

What about CD and Blu-ray patents from Sony?

what about them? bluray/cd is/are a licensed technology, when you buy the bluray drive sony (among others) is getting paid.
It would be like HD-DVD using bluray patents, then you can rest assured they would be sued, and everyone who has a bluray/cd drive has given the correct fee to use it, if indeed sony even ask for a fee they might have put it in FRAND which means they might give people the ability to use them for free.
Once a patent goes like that, it cant be undone.
Motorollas patents never went frand, or rand (reasonable and non discriminatory), and this ruling has said they are not frand or rand, so Motorolla is free to do a deal with microsoft for 50p and ask for 45billion from apple if they want. They do not have to be reasonable or non discriminatory, they can demand whatever they want or have the product removed.
