Broadband providers.

My broadband has gotten progressively worse over the last few months. It started getting slower in late summer/auatumn and has now reached the point where 8 times out of 10 I can't even load my homepage after 6pm (it's like being on dial up again). It's a 8mb broadband so I understand it's not the fastest in the world but it should still be decent (and was more than enough up until last summer).

So I have two questions for those of you more geeky than I, the people with computer smarts etc.

1. What is the most likely cause of this? Are they throttling my broadband?

2. What provider would you recommend?

Check this site to see which providers offer what in your area. We are currently in the process of changing from Sky Connect to Sky Unlimited because Connect is crap and they've just set up LLU at our exchange point.

Re: Broadband providers.

Go for an LLU service with someone like Sky or O2/BE if you can.

Who is your ISP?

Sky.We have one of the packages that covers internet, phone and tv. Hence why I'm not keen to switch providers as it would effect the overall package.

Perhaps you are sharing a line with a lot of other people, if alot of folks of your on the surrounding streets are hammering the net it might affect you speed as well. Give Sky a call and ask them to run a check on the line, if they say nothing is wrong tell them to get BT involved. They will try and get you to contact BT but as they are the provider it is up to them. BT will only say "I am sorry but you will have to speak your ISP". You will go around in circle's so insist that Sky deal with it with themselves.

Odds are you're on Sky Connect like me, and they will/do throttle your connection at peak times. But if Sky have LLU available at your exchange point then you could upgrade to Sky Unlimited (which i've been told is much better) and it will probably end up being cheaper.

Ah right so you're on Sky Broadband Connect then? Yeah they heavily traffic-shape their non-LLU package big time. Might worth checking on Sam Knows to see if you can go for their 20meg service, would be well worth the switch if you could.

Good point. And even if you cannot get the full 20MB it might be worth it anyway if it offer more freedom regarding bandwidth and monthly download allowance.
