This is great for me, i started my physics degree on monday and now a whole century of physics could be upended, could also mean that i get taught a load of rubbish for the next 4 years. Anyways a very exciting time for all physicists, but more likely than not its just a systematic error or some sort.

The simple solution is to burn these heretics at CERN for going against what is written in the books, flat out ignore or destroy any evidence that may lead to confirmation of a discovery that matter can exceed the speed of light and threaten anyone that attempts to run experiments to try and confirm the results with death.
Oh wait, this is science... not religion.
Carry on.

Definitely not, time-dilation doesn't effect the wavelength of light emitted from a distant star/galaxy at all. Time dilation is all about viewing moving objects in different reference frames. The change in wavelength is Doppler shift, the same effect that causes car engines to change their pitch as they pass you on the road.
Combined speeds can sometimes create apparent-FTL, but neither body is actually moving faster than the speed of light.
On the OP topic, back in the 80s there was a bit of buzz about an idea that neutrinos can have Tachyonic properties, it was pretty much dismissed at the time, but this find might cause some more study into it. Problem with theoretical Tachyons is that they cannot transfer information.

This is potentially a really exciting discovery. They have got a result which seems odd, rechecked it loads of times so have asked the rest of the scientific community to verify it.
It's possible (or tbh probable) that it is data collection error but if not then this can open up new possibilities to how we think the universe works. One possible explanation is that rather than the particles literally travelling faster than the speed of light, they appear to but are actually taking "short cuts" through higher dimensions.
Some theories propose that there are up to 9 (I think) curled up dimensions.
Another theory is that rather than being in 4 dimensional space (3 spatial + 1 time) there are membranes floating in higher dimensional space, like 2D sheets of paper waving about in 3d. If true you could short cut certain regions by going through a wormhole that cuts through the higher dimension.
Particle entanglement does technically allow transfer of information faster than the speed of light but it is not strictly the same thing, but it is weird and people are trying to understand it.
edit: added a break to try and make it a bit less TL;DR

was that aimed at me? I never claimed to know quantum mechanics, I find some of it interesting and did learn a bit at uni.
I'm sorry wanted to add more to the discussion than "herp derp time travel"

you got to love it when everyone with a pyshics degree 'thinks' they know pyshics... then speed of light is broke..
Lets face it, people who read the back of a cornflakes box are as qualified as these people.
