I'm pretty certain that if you owe the taxman any money they will adjust your tade code for the year and simply take more tax. (my neighbours tax code is 12L !!!)
benefits can also be deducted from so there is no real escape. :/

I think they can if it's in your house, otherwise everyone would just say it all belongs to someone else. There are defined items that they aren't allowed to take, but I doubt that bailiffs are known for their strict application of the rules. I can't see anyone minding much if you were to shoot them.
I doubt that jail would be considered for owing tax, only possibly for having evaded it in the first place or refusing to pay it now despite being able to. And they are far more likely to try and reach a payment plan than send the bailiffs round too.
