Yes you can! I am human so my brain is complex enough to have different rules for different situations and not just all all encompassing regulation.

I read an article before, that cats are not independent but parasitic.

Like a leech, they hook themselves on, eat their fill, then go off looking for more victims, sometimes living with two families..

Dogs on the other hand will be part of your group, dont mistake this for not beind independent, a dog can hunt if it needs and wont go looking for other people to feed it behind your back, like a scoundrel.
