Facebook are testing New Zealand people on whether they're willing to pay to post comments on their Facebook page. The costs being introduced would be around 25p, 50p - £1.25 the more dearer the purchace, the more prominant the comment will be towards other posts. Facebook's revenue is in profit, but it had slowed in the recent year compared to other years.

Something that will be used by less well know brands/ businesses and people trying to promote their Just giving I guess will be the biggest market for this, which I don't really have a problem with .

It's not pay to post, even says so in the article - its pay to promote, they'll never get rid of free posting/free membership but its fair game to look for extra profits from something that may appeal to small and big buisness or random users who want to pimp their lame posts.
Nothing wrong here, pretty much the same thing as those top highlighted google searches.

Your right, it is for people who wanna promote their posts, but how long do you think it'll be before we start paying for all our posts in general or possibly our page for that matter. If they want Facebook to succeed more than they're doing now, there going the wrong way about it. Part of what drew people to the site was down to the free access and a more freedom of communication.
If you have so many people wanting to pay top whack of £1.25 to promote their posts, then the other persons posts of 25p would get demoted from importance and their posts could just be as important, which in turn would force them to pay more for the their post. How much promotional time does £1.25 get you anyway before another persons £1.25 takes over? I notice the BBC missing that part out as per-usual.

If they can make money they'll do it.

Hmmmm... you have to remember that other companies have worked this out pretty well, usually offering one or two tiers and companies get on fine with it. I've got no problem with this, if you don't want to see promoted posts then unlike that company. If they aren't annoying and I'm happy to see them appearing higher and/or are useful to me then I'll be fine with them.
If a random person wants to pay to promote then that's up to them, makes sense for FB to allow people to access it as well as its extra cash and the choice is yours. They'll never force people to pay - do that and then people will leave and those companies won't have a reason to pay to promote comments as they'll be less and less people who'll see them. If anything FB would use that money to drive membership in those countries where FB isn't as big yet.
More free members = paid to promote ads from companies = more money.
Paid for membership + paid to promote just doesn't and wouldn't make sense.

Google is a search and advertisement company.
Facebook is a supposed to be a social site.
You already get advertisements based on what friends like, now we are going to have them inserted into our social updates, which isnt a bad thing, but when they are given priority it is a bad thing imo.
So they are not a social site, they are an advertisement company.
