I dont know where you lot live, but you wouldnt get a seat on a bus here just for having a sling on your arm, if anything someone would try to mug you, and people would rather sit beside a harmless blood drinking emo than some junkie. If you want to be left alone on the bus, or have a seat by yourself, just smile at people.You have to put a bit of an act on, obviously. Look in pain, and someone usually gives up their seat... As for smiling, I've tried that before, it works like a charm. For even better results, pat the seat beside you.
