Why don't we eat chocolate crucifix's at Easter? It would seem more topical.

Because Easter has pagan roots: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/belief/2010/apr/03/easter-pagan-symbolism

As with Christmas originally being a Pagan thingy eggs at Easter was too.  In Pagan times the egg represented the rebirth of the earth, which allowed people to become hopeful of spring after a long winter.

The term Easter comes from Eostre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, to whom the month of April was dedicated.

People exchanged eggs as a symbol of creation, new-life, and a resurrection of nature after winter.

Not sure how the eggs became part of Christianity, I'm guessing it's got to do with Zombie Jesus (not the first zombie, just the most famous, the first being Lazarus).  So the eggs nowadays have become more of representing zombies than nature reborn.

Decorating and painting Easter eggs for easter became common in England in the Middle Ages.  Infact every Easter morning I have boiled eggs and when done turn them over and paint them.  Will upload pic if wanted when I get home.

Anywho around the 17th century people started exchanging egg-shaped toys and eventually, by the 19th century, the first chocolate eggs were made in Europe.

So that's why it isn't a chocolate crucifix, although don't know what bunnies have to do with Easter.  Perhaps another Spring symbol.

Pffft, Pagans are such hipsters. They were celebrating everything before it became mainstream.

Also, you can see the terror in this childs face -
