I reciently had to replace the centre section of the exhaust on my frontera. The rear secion was held on with (what looked like) cones of rust, thats how had they had been corroded. There was nothing to engage with my sockets. I ended up cutting the centre section just before the union, lowering the centre section and slithering the rear secion over the rear axle. I then had to attack the rusted bolts with an angle grider.
I then found out that the motor factor had messed up the order and sent the wrong section, so i had to weld up the bits that i had cut and re-order the exhaust.
Take the car to a garage, unless you have **all** the tools to do the job.

Many moons ago my old Celica had a rotten exhaust, we physically couldn't weld the backbox anymore, we ended up making a stainless sleeve to slide over it.
Eventually the whole exhaust fell off on the M25, only the front pip was left, I didn't realise till I got to Tarpots on the A13, it sounded like a tank!
I also got pulled up once for having a blowing exhaust, it wasn't even that bad. I did ask the Police Officer why he'd chosen to stop me and not the hundreds of idiots with deliberate noisy exhausts that resemble a baked bean can hanging out the arse of their car, he wasn't impressed.

On a 13 year old 4X4 that goes off road very frequently, body filler can only go so far....
