Floccinaucinihilipilification - the longest non technical word in the english language at 29 letters.

There's also some disease caused by dust particles with a 45 letter name.

The longest word ever published for a reason other than to publish a long word was the systematic name of the tobaco mosaic virus coat protein, which is 1185 letters long, although there are proteins that would have significantly longer names if someone bothered to work them out.
