Also a good idea is to have your luggage locked, this way the TSA cannot dip your items and snoop at your silky Y-fronts etc.
If the TSA want to go through your luggage they'll simply break the locks. You can get TSA-friendly padlocks (where they have a master key) to avoid that.

You can stay in the US for up to 90 days under the visa waiver program but beyond that, I think you need to apply for a B-2 visa.
You'd probably also need to apply well in advance, as I don't think stays can't be extended under the waiver program while you're in the country.
Also, when you get there, you'll need to provide various documents including proof of funds to show that you will be self-sufficient for the period you plan on staying.
