If it had of launched when they announced it (a long while ago) then it might have been but now the market is moving on.
At the moment, the fact of the matter is, Samsung are the only real apple contender out there.
Their 7.7 tab is the best tablet on the market, Their Note phone is the best compromise between tablet and phone on the market, and their range of galaxy phones are among the best on the market.
I just cant wait till windows phone 8 comes out, and my phone, laptop, tablets all run a real os, I cant wait to have a samsung galaxy note that can run windows.
Asus wont have the name to contend with apple, No one looking at an iPad will ever settle for an asus, they might for a samsung, and they might again for a htc.
Interestingly I been playing around with a kindle fire that came in the post the other day, and its surprsing I would indeed rate it as an iPad/Samsung 7.7 contender for sure despite lacking the specs, but wouldnt rate the asus as one.

I think what Fenian is trying to say is the brand image has already been established for the main players, people now expect them to offer the best equipment which would mean Asus missed the boat. Had they been there when the "smart" revolution began then who knows, they may have been in with a shout.
It is extremely rare for an electronics company to do a "Humax", where a relatively unknown company comes into an already populated market and wipes literally everybody aside to claim a No. 1 or No. 2 spot. HTC were there near enough to the beginning of all of this to get their name out there, for Asus they are trying to board a train that left for it's destination an hour ago.

Yeah they just missed the boat, they nearly had something with garmin phones, but really all they are aiming to be is "another" android/windows maker.
Htc pioneered it, being the first, and also they didnt go after apple, they just simply provided an alternative.
Samsung are the high end ones with class, they took the alternative and went after apple.
That leaves everyone else in the "others" category. Im sure they will sell, Im sure they will make profit, but its not samsung/apple/htc scale. I cant see sony breaking the market in a big way either, unless they come out with something special and give it to the market as soon as its announced.

I suppose they would have to do what you said about 4 months ago... a phone and tablet using Bravia screen technology, Walkman music feature and Alpha camera technology.... probably SEN fully intergrated instead of being tacked on (lord only knows what that could offer of use to most people who are not gamers which other apps don't already give them), ummm... can't really think of anything else but the product so far would probably cost over £500, Expensive
