The last time I checked you could get an iPhone that way too - if you spend enough each month (I think it was around ten thousand pounds or something).
Anyway, I was hoping for a smaller (nano) version of the iPhone. I won't be troubling Apple to supply me with an iPhone 5.

In what way ? My sister always gets the latest iphone. Should she buy it out right then ? I don't see how its cheaper; so I seek enlightenment please. thanks in advance

Right we'll just use the iPhone as it's relevant to this thread as an example.
With the iPhone the only way you'll get the handset 'free' is on tarriff of at least £36 a month (it could well be more with the new one), so over the course of a two year contract that will cost £864.
Now compare that to buying the phone at £529 and then say using Giffgaff for 24 months at £10 a month that equates to a total cost of £769 over two years, plus you'll have a SIM free phone too as opposed to one that will likely be network locked.
