Kiwi's crappy electronic appliance week from hell

Ok, if it wasn't bad enough that in the weekend that my Front speakers for my lounge system final gave up (cost me $1000 back in 2004, so I'm guessing to get equivalent KEF speakers now won't be cheap)... to add salt to my wounds..

... my launch PS3 has finally bricked... the old shutdown, briefly flash yellow with 3 beeps and flashing red light trick....

:(

What sucks is I haven't been able to synch since the PSN has been down, so goodbye Mortal Kombat and Need For Speed:Hot Pursuit trophies... not to mention the game saves for those two games...

Edit: Did I mention the original Assassins Creed was in it? as I thought rather than buy Brotherhood for cheap when I have plenty of other newish games to play while I wait for L.A Noire, I'd attempt another assassination in the original game.

even my trusty launch console dislikes the first AC game...

Damn, that sucks kiwi. :( You could do what I did and try the YLOD repair (or as I like to call it, the Frankenstein). When I did it I managed to get it running long enough to deauthorise the launch model, sync trophies and do the data transfer to my current slim model. You've got nothing to lose by trying it.

Had to laugh at this Kiwi :smileyhappy:... I suppose it wasn't all that bad a game - just extremely repetitive. It gets quite repetitive too. My only other complaint is that it's repetitive :smileywink:

Get a heatgun on the job, and you'll keep your saves, trophies etc. This will help. As to when we'll be able to synch those trophies........................ anyones guess. I'm just hoping I don't YLOD again before the network goes back up! So long as the PS3 holds out until xmas I should be ok

Well the good news.... if you can call returning Assassins Creed to the land of the living - good news.... is, after a couple of hours off I turned it on, and got the green light long enough to eject the disc.

I thought the gods of gaming might all of a sudden shine on me, but no, after 10 seconds it resorted to blinking again...

It's highly unlikely, but it might not be a bad idea if you're going to lay down a lot of money replacing the stuff to get an electrician to look over your circuitry to make sure there's no dodgy amperage levels... yeah I know more expense isn't what you want, but if multiple electronics break within a short time frame there's always a chance there could be something funny with the wiring.

Yeah, everything in the lounge plugs into a least a basic overloading multi-board.... The PS3, xbox and TV are all plugged into a 'Pure AV' surge protector.

In other news, the firm I bought the speakers from are going to get them checked out by their engineers.... seems if they can be repaired, there is no real gain spending that sort of money again for new ones..

But this has also prompted me to think about upgrading gear, as I have some funds behind me now.... the two key areas being my Reciever and TV.. 2 component and 1 composite only channels on a less than 720P 42" Plasma, and a 5.1 receiver with a bucket load of analog, but only 2 optical and 1 co-oax connections, is starting to feel a bit dated... Time to move to the HDMI era.. ;)

Whoop... I'm back... :D

Firstly... condolensces to you Rob... I've been in that boat back when the PS2 was first released, so I have an idea how you feel... suffice to say it brought great strain to my relationship for a wee while, and lead to me almost hurting my knuckles, damaging the lounge door, or a combination of the both..

Ok... update time..

I also had my only browser still signed in sign out a few nights ago, after my laptop shutdown on me.. next thing I know when I rebooted it, that I had no power in my power pack.. Personally I wonder whether the fact my lounge chair was sitting on it (not my fault, for some reason teenagers seem to always manage to move heavy lounge chairs when they sit on them)... 'Others' in the house disagree... I'm letting the issue die, but it is now going to cost me $100 to replace that. My home theatre front speakers is still unknown at this stage..

As  for the PS3... I now have a new 320GB slim in my posession... coughed out for one a couple of nights ago (they threw in Motostorm Apocolypse and an HDMI cable).... The restore process from the backup off my launch console went ok... copied the media across (no folder structure), most of the profiles, and the gamesaves... the two or three I have tested so far have worked fine.

I'm currently sync-ing my trophies, which is naturally running really slow (just as it does when you put a new drive in)... I have lost all my Dante's Inferno save, although my Plat trophy was synched, so I don't really care.. have my Hot Pursuit save, but kept most of my trophies, and lost all my progress and trophies for Mortal Kombat as the PSN went down before I got the game.

Thoughts on the slim so far.. i actually love it... I don't know what the fuss is about the design?!... its much more compact (the fatty looks like it belongs in Area 51) and the matte finish is so much more practical than the glossy dust/scratch magnet..

Dissapointed to loose 2 USB port... yeah you can run an adaptor, but I actually hate having a 100 adaptops running off my devices.... such as the HD-DVD drive on the 360.. I doubt I'll miss the B/C as I've only used it twice, and I certainly won't miss the SACD.. and Linux is no longer an issue regardless..

So now the software downloading begins... as does sorting out a certain hundred dollars of Singstar music licensing...
